I think I'm ready to quit.

Last night, I helped host an Open Mic in Concord CA. The Open Mic generally happens on the first and third Monday evenings of the month. I am the "house bass player" (I back anyone up who wants bass) and also help announce who's up next, crack jokes, etc. Recently I've become frustrated with the fact that the people who oversee the Open Mic do nothing to promote it (I didn't even see anything on Facebook about it), don't adjust things like mic levels so people can sound their best, and in general act like they don't care. As a result, attendance is down to the same ten or fifteen people each time we meet, and they rarely get to sound as good as they could. I already play bass, guitar and mandolin in two bands, and am growing tired of donating my time to something that's not going anywhere. The bands are doing fine. Anything causing you frustration these days?

if something like that no longer is fun, might indeed be time to move on

@TheHorse If you do that, be sure to tell the owner why. If they care, they might make a change.

@TheHorse Yeah, I don't care for that cow, or the Chick Filet cows. I don't like the Serta (I think it's Serta) sheep, and I don't like talking Cheezits. Elsie was cool though.

My computer LOL. But i agree they should be promoting it. I have done fund raising things in the past and put it all over facebook when to the local radio station and they said something about it every day up until the event. Put it in the paper. They could at least put it on facebook. They can do that from home i might would say something to them about it. And tell them that you are jut tring to help.

I've mentioned to my co-hosts that I'm frustrated. One agrees with me. The one who is in touch with the people who put it together acts like she doesn't care.

@TheHorse Is this your place and they use it to do it? And do they pay you to do it and do they make money to put it on?

I am not. The main benefit to me is that I get to enjoy the company of other musicians and practice bass on unfamiliar tunes.

Yes, the VA is causing me frustration, but that's nothing new. I hope you can either convince the club to pump some life into open mic night by promoting it, or find a better gig.

@TheHorse So true. I had a poetry phrase too a decade ago. I did get a couple of poems printed and some paid for as well. I didn't have any luck with short stories though. But I never gave up.

Yes, we are experiencing May Gray. I don't mind this weather condition, but the coastal clouds are not burning off in the morning lately. It is staying deeply overcast well into the late afternoon. I figure it this way, we pay more for everything here because our weather is spectacular. So, if it isn't, we should get a discount (but don't, of course).

@TheHorse Yes, a lot. I'll be getting rid of the obvious first - the clothes I haven't been able to fit in for years but held onto hoping to lose this weight. I'm also going to be looking at the dishes I have. I like to accumulate them, so I'm sure I'll get rid of some of them as well. It will be the nicknacks that will be the hardest to figure out, but I'll go through those as well. And then there's the closets, and everything I have packed in boxes that I've kept for more years than I can count.

yes - the lack of people's enthusiasm for LIFE! Its seems that as I get older, people get duller and more mundane - my fireds of the same age are OLD while I feel alive and busy and want to do more and more and more. How does one get into that sad state of mind??

It seems like they've given up! When I'm older, softball will be out of the picture. But I'll still be able to play music, have good conversations, refinish wood, write, etc. There's too much to do! I'm glad you have that attitude.

@Inlemay I don't have many friends that are that pessimistic. Some of my music band mates are over 60 and still playing away. My Auntie is over 90 and still reads voraciously. She challenges me to read this and that.

That's too bad. I like open mic nights. One of the local bars here recently stopped holding their Sunday night acid jazz jam, which was basically a jazz open mic night. I'm still bummed.
