Are You Good At Saving Money?

I am saving money for a holiday to Dubai in October, and as I want to stay in a nice 5 star hotel and travel my emirates it is going to be fairly expensive. Plus I will be paying half of my mothers expenses too, so that will be quite a big expensive.
I think it will be worth it as I have never been to Dubai and heard it is a lovely place to visit. I just need to start saying now. I am doing lots of overtime at work to help me save, but my energy levels are making it really hard to do overtime without feeling ill.
Are you good at saving money?
The only way I can save really is by doing lots of overtime at work :(

Saving money is easy for me.
I have a goal in mind, and that is to buy shares that pay dividend every year.
I try to save half my income every month, though sometimes i will still go overseas vacation twice a year.
I try to cut down the expenses by going to regional countries instead of taking long haul flight.
My job does not pay overtime, though I have fixed income and that allows better planning.

@gudheart Think about those businesses that earn regardless of business environment.
I have invested in one business trust that holds incinerator plant, power plant, water treatment plant, and other utilities.
This is a very stable business.
No matter what, people still throw out rubbish, and they still need water and electricity.

@gudheart last year, we ended up experience a cruise (Feb) and travel to Boracay Island (June). All using those funds.
This year, we have $2,000 plus we added up our 52-week savings and add aditonal arround $400 just to my husband's wish of Maldives tour.

Absolutely! I've been saving every penny I have since I was 5 years old. I only buy necessities (food & toiletries). I don't go out. I only go out when I need to work & buy my necessities. Not a party animal and not into shopping. Every penny I received from my allowances when I was still studying & when I started working, I kept them in the bank. I don't trust my government's benefits. So, I've been building my own retirement funds, emergency, savings, etc. I don't want to rely on anyone including the government when I'm older.
I deposit money first in the bank, what is left after depositing money is what I can spend for my necessities (food, toiletries, rent). And, I work a lot even on weekends. If time will come that I can't anymore work or I won't be able to work, I believe my funds will save me.

I'm not good at saving money since I like to shop for high end makeups and branded journals. I'm also fond of collecting pandora charms.

@gudheart We are planning to visit New Jersey this December though so i'm actually trying to get a schedule for our visa application interview. And the visa interview for each person costs $250 I think. And there's the three of us.

I feel a goal always motivates you to save. In your case you have mentioned that the goal is a vacation to Dubai. Dubai is normally a hot city, which I understand you have already learned from the experience of other members who have replied to your post. The temperature during the last months on the year is pleasant and I think it is worth a visit. The city is expensive but I am sure you have your reasons to choose Dubai.
So the post is how to save more. Well before I start I must acknowledge the nice gesture which you have shown in taking your mom to the vacation with you. I understand your duration for saving is less and I really don’t think shares or any form of equity would be a good idea for you. These are instruments for a long term. I really feel you should be safe rather than sorry and put in a fund which is a debt instrument and assures a minimum guaranteed return. The risk will be less and so will be the reward but the rewards are certain which seems to be the need of the hour in your case.
Lastly I would recommend that you see other emirates as well like Abu Dhabi and Ras- al Khaimah. Do let me know if you need any information on Dubai as I have been there on more than one occasion.

do you need to show your passport when crossing to the other emirates like abu dhabi and ras-al khaimah from dubai?

@zap_81 so tourists can go from dubai to abu dhabi to ras-al khaimah then back to dubai without anything checking on them? there are no borders?

That is the plight of most of the people. This sounds realistic. You curb yourself so much during the last days of the month that once the money is credited to your account you feel you need to spend as you have sacrificed a lot until you realize its time to sacrifice again :)

@gudheart I hate taking money from friends because it's so hard paying it back. But I made a promise to myself to work very hard on saving up that money to get back to her. I loaned a friend money many years ago and almost never got the money back. The whole thing hurt our friendship, so I know what I have to do now.
