Very Sad to Say

My heart is broken. I looked out my window a few days ago and only saw one robin's egg in the nest. I looked out today, and there are none.
Mama robin had been faithfully sitting on her eggs through cold, rain, sun, and wind.
Who did this? The squirrel? I know it wasn't Doodles. It breaks my heart.
Why is Nature so cruel???

All animals have to eat in order to stay alive. Perhaps these little eggs provided nutrition for another nest full of baby birds?

@ElizabethWallace I realize that, but these were so special to me.

@DianneN Sorry. It might make you feel better to assume my story is correct.

It is early enough that she might nest again. Other birds, like crows or starlings could also be the culprits. Still, it is always sad to see things like that happen.

@DianneN I'm not sure, but that may be a bad idea if it is very exposed.

@JamesHxstatic Thanks. There are so many other trees and shrubs she can choose here. I did enjoy my bird's eye view until today. Knowing that she may still have babies makes me feel better. Thanks for that, James!

Could have it been that the eggs hatched already or is it too soon?

@DianneN it is indeed sad if Nature had other plans on those eggs and it did not include hatching these eggs into birds.

@allen0187 That's Nature. Sad, but there's nothing I could do.

@Drosophila I've seen them together on the trees. I wasn't looking went it happened. Hope they mate again.

Ya never know about Mother Nature @DianneN . My thought is that another 'critter' had to eat. It was like when I had the organic farm and I had chickens. Every now and again a hawk would come swooping down and grab one. It upset me that I'd lost a chicken, but at the same time, the hawk needed to eat too.

@DianneN I can just imagine how Momma Robin came to the nest to sit on her baby and it wasn't there.

Nature has a way of keeping a balance, and sometimes it's not always pretty to us humans. But we humans experienced similar issues hundreds of years ago, before medicine and technology was able to cure a lot of illnesses and diseases. Families would often have 5-6 children each in the hopes that 1-2 of them might live to adulthood.
We have a bird at one of the swimming pools that I manage comes back every year and lays her eggs inside our lifeguard office. She was smart enough to figure out that her eggs are safe inside the office, and I guess over time she has learned to not only tolerate us humans being there, but also learn that we will not harm her. She usually hatches 4-5 baby birds every year. Not sure how many of those make it to adulthood, but at least they're safe while they're in the nest! Momma bird currently has 5 babies in her nest this year!

@DianneN I can't believe how fast the five baby birds are growing! They are now out of their nest and running around our lifeguard office! They are trying to learn how to fly, but they haven't quite mastered how to steer themselves! It's funny to watch them crash into walls and other objects because they haven't learned how to steer yet! lol

The whole eat or be eaten thing is so hard to take isn't it? The fox went by with something in his mouth... Maybe a gopher. My husband is always trying to shoot the gophers too as the farmers hate them. Now the neighbour wants my husband to shoot the fox too as she has lost some chickens and turkeys to one predator or other. I feel like the gophers and foxes deserve to live too.

This happens to birds often and the saddest are those like you and all bird lovers. Perhaps birds themselves are prepared for such eventualities.

Perhaps, a snake ate the eggs. A couple of years ago, we found a snake eating the bird eggs.
