Is it kindness or selfishness?

A friend of mine wanted to apologize to a girl for accidentally hurting her. But the faults, to me, were mostly hers. I told my friend that it was really kind of him for wanting to do that. But he said "I'm not kind, I'm selfish. If I don't help her feel better, I would feel like sh*t because of the guilt. I still think it's kind of him, but maybe he's right. Maybe it's just his selfishness.
