Speaking of not knowing what to say....

So I said to myself, "Self, what would you do in XYZ situation?" Are you confused, read on. My husband and I both went to a beauty shop in town for two years. I've written about it, it reminded me of Dolly Parton's shop in Steel Magnolias. However, this shop wasn't as nice. There were things that really got to me and eventually it broke me. There was never any heat on in winter and to sit in a beauty shop getting your hair cut while wearing a winter coast was the straw that broke my back. We discussed it and since a new shop had just opened we decided to try it out. I called the new shop and made an appointment and then called the old shop to cancel our appointment. I didn't get to speak to the owner, but one of the other girls and I only said, "I have to cancel our appointment." I didn't say anything else. It has been several months and yesterday we went to the Rocky Top Inn in town for dinner. As we sat and waited for our food I glanced at the people at a table catty-corner to us. She looked familiar but I couldn't place her. Then it hit me, the owner of the beauty shop from hell. One reason I didn't recognize her at first - she gained a lot of weight. She used to be really thin and now she has a double chin. Anyway, they finished while we were eating and as she went by our table she said, "Hi, how are you folks doing?" Thinking on my feet I came out with, "I was trying to figure out why you looked so familiar." She laughed and kept walking, thank goodness. Since the beauty shop is a gossip center I guess our names will be the hot topic of discussion next week, but that's fine, we don't know many people and they sure don't know us and we like it that way. I'm glad she didn't put you on the spot by asking why you cancelled. That could have been very uncomfortable. My guess is, she probably has a lot of cancellations or people that just stop coming. Who would want to sit in a chair for an hour or more while freezing to get their hair done!

She was recommended to us by our realtor - a person we later found out lied about a lot of things so I'm sure those two will be having a good time talking about us today since they go to the same church. The place needed a good cleaning/remodeling/updating so there was much more to it, but until a few months ago there was only one other place to go and I didn't like the looks of it.

@AbbyGreenhill Let's hope they enjoy their talk! People like that have very boring lives. I don't blame you at all for not going there any longer! I hope the place you are going now is nice, warm and has friendly people!

Interesting that she would stop at your table. When you told her you were trying to place her, whatever she was going to say, stopped her. At least that would be my guess, as I would wonder why someone stopped coming around and I never heard from them again.

That and other reasons is why we don't go there any longer. And gossip - all they did was talk about everyone in town.

She is lucky that you do not have another place where to gossip about her, you would have a lot to say. Fat, with double chin, this is a good gossip.

It was nice that she said hello but didn't engage you in a conversation as to why she hasn't seen you lately

Since it's fairly obvious that we have been getting haircuts since the last time at her shop I really expected her to say - where did you get that haircut? If she had been with her cronies that work at her shop she probably would have.

I followed my hairdresser when he changed locations and the old place kept contacting me for over a year, with this special or that.

I liked the way she cut hair, but she isn't leaving, she's the owner, its her shop and her employees I have issues with.

I think you did quite well with the answer you gave. She may not have any clue t why you quit going to her shop and maybe you weren't the only ones that changed places. I'd not worry about it.

I don't worry about things like that, it's over and done. I figured at some point in time we would wind up in the same place, this town is very small! I would hope I'm not the only person who doesn't like to freeze while getting a haircut.

Sometimes it is hard to remember where we last saw someone, when we see them somewhere else. I often have that problem! Then, we really don't know what to say, because we are put on the spot. Sounds like you recovered quickly.

@AbbyGreenhill I thought at first you were going to say that she happened to be your waitress. That maybe too many people left and she had to close the shop. I wouldn't have know what to say either.

I would have also left, she`s offering a service, she should make sure it`s comfortable for clients. You did right to find some other place that care for your comfort. I have never been one to worry if people discuss me,atleast it makes me feel im important enough for them to think about me and lose time of the day talking about me.
