On the road

We are thinking of renting an RV to take our son to college in July. We are hoping it will be less expensive than a plane ticket for 3 people. If we fly we have to take in consideration lodging and food etc. With the RV we do not have to worry about lodging and food
What are your thoughts?
Have any of you taken an RV out of state? Any pointers?
Any comments would be greatly appreciated

Hi Brenda! Well, I hope I can give the most relevant response but I live in the Philippines so I am not sure if I can give accurate and specific tips. Anyway, here, we can purchase promo plane tickets as long as we book our flights a few weeks in advance. Still, I think that you should assess your family's tolerance for road travel. If it is easy for them, then I think that would be better because aside from saving money, you can also spend more quality time with your son since it will be like a double purpose road trip. You can create special memories while you travel.

We wanted to spend an extended time overseas, mostly in Ireland where our son lives but also on the continent. We couldn't afford to stay, well, anywhere really - not for an extended time. We bought a motor-home over there and used it for five months. We had intended to sell it but enjoyed our travels so much we've kept it and hope to use it again next year. It was very expensive to rent motor-home over there. I think it is a great idea depending on how much it is to hire. We were lucky enough to be able to pick up a cheapish second-hand vehicle. It is in good condition and we are happy that we will lose very little on it when we eventually sell it again.
