Is your dog truelly "smart"

I tell every body every day how smart my dog is, he knows his commands he figures out obstacles that come his way. He can open the bin, open doors and if food is left out he will quietly and very patiently wait until every one leaves the room or turns their head. However ...... Is he truelly smart.... I always thought he was quite the problem solver and was a dog genius but today everything changed. I heard loud bangs coming from my back door, continuous banging that was very loud so I jumped out of my chair and ran to see what on earth was happening, as soon as I could see the back door it was quite clear to see what was going on. My working lab cooper had found a rather large stick, rather large being about 2 metres long. He was running back and forth charging at the back door with this massive piece of wood in his mouth. The stick was clearly never going to fit but how could my genius dog not see that the big stick was 3 times the size of the doorway and would never fit unless he dragged it threw length ways. Despite my disappointment I couldn't help but burst out laughing and get my camera out and film him running up at the door for about 5 minutes trying to get this stick through until it' eventually snapped. What I want to know is how can a dog be so smart yet so dumb? Have you got a very smart dog that is also super stupid?

He sounds like a typical lab - where food is concerned he will figure out any problem, but without that motivation he just goes at things like a bull in a china shop

That is %100. He will do anything it takes for food or to swim anything else and he'll give zero effort :)

He's smart but he lacks common sense. It's a common ailment among humans. Seems it's now passed to animals, as well!

yea for me my dog is smart because he can remember where we went and when he was left behind he knows where to go just to go back at his sweet home

My other dog does that she is also and escape artist who will go missing for hours then just be sat outside the front door. She also winds up a family a few streets away from us because she really likes to go and visit these strangers every time she escapes and they always return her haha
