injections for floppy ears in dogs

June 8, 2006 2:49am CST
My dog, a Collie/Shepherd, 1 1/2 years has floppy ears. I've read about a veterinarian in Brazil, http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/3923099.stm He does injections to help ears stand up. Do you know of any one that does this in Canada or the USA, or of results? Jay

I would never mess with a dogs ears. I think cropping and training ears is cruel. It is painful for the dogs, too. It is often done to purebreds for a certain effect in show, but it should not be done to a crossbred pet. It's completely unnecessary.

Even on purebreds, there isn't really a purpose. Some countries don't allow such cruelty. Ever see a schnauzer or other traditionally cropped and docked dog? They are so adorably cute when left with the natural tail and ears!

I would not do it .I am not really against croping ears in breeds that have that but I think the injecting thing is wrong for one thing as far as show dogs it is illegal .I don't see why it matters in pets they look just as good with flopped ears as they do with erect ears .A collies ears are to be tiped at the point anyway .I don't have issues with taping ears but thats done while they are pups .I think people who have pets should not expect them to look a certain way and value thier special look most of all mutts they are a one of a kind .

Why on earth would you want your dog's ears to stand up? Collies have floppy ears and they're beautiful. Why not leave ears as nature intended. Sorry I don't know of any one that does this, not in Australia anyway, which apparently is the largest pet owning nation in the world as I was told last week! Good luck with your search, even though I don't agree with it.

Collies ears are not meant to go prick (straight up in the air). Their folded ear provides an amazing sensitivity to sound. This was especially important in the Collie's early sheep herding days, when it was extremely important to listen for predators or lost stock.

Is there a reason you want your dogs ears to stand up? Whether a dogs ears stand up or hang down has no bearing what-so-ever on their hearing. So do not do it because you think they will hear better. Do you want to make him/her look mean/bad? I would think it may just make them look funny. You would be better off taking the money it would cost and spend it on yourself and your dog.

why would you want to do that if you wanted a dog with pointy ears then you should have picked a breed whoes ears are pointy would you want someone to change something on you because they perfered it ?just my oppinion

That sounds cruel to me. Messing with a dog's ears messes with its hearing ability. I say, just leave the ears as they are. Mixed dogs are supposed to have "goofy" ears. LOL

I think it is better you leave them as they are.. coz it is just something to do with the appearance and doing this wil not improve their life span or quality of life.. why bother to make them go through this?

Please let your poor doggy ears flop. I have never agreed with the practice that many people have of making the dogs ears stand up. If they were mean to stand up they would have been born that way.

Leave the poor animal alone. Don't try to force him standing ears. All these injections are harmful.
