A lot depends on the year and the general condition of your car. If the body and the interior are in 'new' shape, the exhaust system is good, suspension, brakes, steering, etc are in great shape, then, I would replace the engine only. It would pay you to have a reliable mechanic do a thorough inspection of your car and go from there. Hope this helps.

It has oil leaks and my coolant leaks out often. Everything else seems fine with it. I'm only 20 and not the ssmartest at decision making.

@felicianicole Sounds like a lot of issues down the road. You could find out if a local junkyard has an engine for three to four hundred bucks and find someone to install it for another three or four hundred; then, trade the car in for a decent used one for around three to four thou. with easy payments. Or you could junk this one, find a way to come up with a thou. to twelve hundred down payment and go the used car route. I take it you're not 'loaded', but, there's no cheap way here. Hope my suggestion is within your means. Just a thought. Best of luck.

Do you know a good car repair shop? Repair expenses can mount unless you have a reputable repairman. We have a saying here "that there's always a racket angle in any business. Monkey business_They keep finding something that needs replacement or needing repair. Finding a good "used" car can also be chancy. Bring someone who is knowledgeable if you decide to go this route.

That would depend on the age of the car and what condition it is in.
