For once, I agree with Philippines' Duterte

Duterte is right to say that 3 children per family is the best for the country. Philippines is already the "children factory" of Asia! If the high birth rate continues, there will be problems 20 years on. Many parents in Philippines are just having blind faith. They just keep on giving birth, and they do not care whether they have the means to bring up the children or not. That is not right. While the Catholic faith does not allow abortion, it does want parents to take care of their children financially, emotionally and spiritually. It does not mean that "God will take care" when parents do not want to take care of the children. I just hope that the implementation of 3 children per family policy allows flexibility. If a family is rich, there is no harm allowing 10 children. They are rich enough to send all the children to the universities, and they are rich enough to hire servants to do all the work. If a family is poor, perhaps giving them financial incentive not to give birth after they have 2 children is a better idea. They can use the money to feed and clothe their 2 children.
Philippine President-elect Rodrigo Duterte said he will defy the Roman Catholic Church and seek to impose a three-child policy, putting him on a new collision course with the bishops a day after he called them "sons of whores".

I agree with this. I hate abortion but I agree with family planning. It is really hard to raise 2 or 3 children for an average family because of the needs of the children specially when it comes to food, shelter, and education. We know that here in the Philippines if you don't have enough funds for children's education we're not able to send them in college so i'll go for 3 child policy.

The worst is that the poor just do not listen to reason. If you want to talk to them about family planning, they just tell you that god will take care. Despite the fact that their children ended up on the street, and do not study hard in school, they just do not bother.

Why does the college issue keep coming up? Is it considered parental failure if a Filipino child doesn't go to college?

@Genipher The college issue keeps on coming up because only 1 in 4 in Philippines are college graduates. Many people in Philippines work overseas, and these are all college graduates. Many banks and big companies outsourced their operations to Philippines, and they hire only college graduates. In a country where the population is young and the competition for good jobs is very stiff, having a college education is a must to get out of poverty cycle.

If a family wants to plan and space their pregnancies, the government should support that.

The problem in Philippines is that the poor people do not plan. They just keep on having children, and let their children become street children.

Filipinos need to plan in controlling birth. On my observation, the more the parents can't provide for their children, the more babies they produce.

Yes, that is what i have observed in both developing and developed countries too. Those who are rich and well educated do not want many children, and those who have no means to take care of their children keep on having children.

Ever since I was very young I was guided by one saying that has inspired me to do my best - God helps those who help themselves. We have to do our part than be led by blind faith. It is clear that quality matters in life to have fulfillment - I feel two or at most three is more than enough - siva

It is almost impossible to reason with those who are poor and have blind faith. They are the ones who have many children, and they are the ones who do not see the need for the children to go to school, and get a good education. The problem in Philippines is that these children become street children, and the whole family is poor for the rest of their lives. I think having 3 children is more than enough for responsible parents. They have to spend so much time and money on the education and upbringing of the children.

@Shiva49 That is a good one. Deng Xiaoping had a way of describing things. His comments about regardless of the color of cats, whatever catches mice is a good cat is really a classic saying.

@scheng1 It is better to be realistic in life than be led by blind faith. I recall Dèng Xiaopíng's words - cross the river by feeling the stones - siva

Everyone can see that the birth rate of Philippines is getting out of control! But I do not agree with him calling the bishops "sons of the w-h-o-r-e-s".

Not sure about his sympathy to the poor people. I will see how he implements the policy. It is tough to go against a power religious organization, and get everyone to have 3 children at home.

Your new President does care about the opinions of anyone else. He will find a way, possibly forcibly to enforce the 3 children rule. We just have to wait and see.

That is because you are not poor and uneducated. It is always the poor that wants to give birth to children all the time. They are so poor and they cannot afford to feed the children, yet they are always having children.

This 3 children policy may not sit in well with the poor. The poor are the ones having this problem. They just keep on having children, and they just let the children wander the streets. Hope he can implement it and stop the unreasonable poor from having too many children who end up in the street.

@JustBhem Not easy to implement. It is impossible to educate the poor about family planning and responsibility of a parent. The poor will just say that god will take care. Either he bribes them to stop giving birth or he forces them to go for abortion similar to the way that the Chinese government enforces the one-child policy for many years.
