Do you find it hard to shut your mind up when trying to sleep!?

Last night I was so tired so I thought I would be able to sleep easily, but my mind was full of thoughts and stress that I could not shut my mind up! I kept thinking of work, which is really bad. I eventually did go to sleep, but took some time. Do you have this problem too? How do you manage them?

Yes. It's often hard for me to turn off my brain. Wasn't always that way. But now … I don't even bother to try to manage it any more. I just figure if my head is on the pillow and I'm dreaming, then I must be sleeping. If I'm not dreaming, then I must awake. When I lift myself up to get out of bed in the morning, if I can remember dreaming, then the night is over. Whatever rest I didn't get, I'm not ever gonna get it.

Since normally I can sleep as long as necessary, I take advantage of that. I have a white noise machine and eye shades, and that makes it possible for me to get back to sleep even if it's a bright as noon outside. and there are street noises.

@bagarad - A white noise machine? Going to have to look that up. I don't know what that is. Sounds great though! You can sleep in the middle of the day? I'd have to be exhausted to do that!!

I always experienced this. Like the idea that I need to sleep early, close my eyes but my thoughts are hovering somewhere. I end up waking up having a headache

I guess this is a very common phenomena. I have had plenty of nights when I have been staying up and thinking. I guess it happens when either something is bothering you or something which is on your mind. I do not know of any solution to this other than trying not to think. I guess not to think is easier said then done.

I have this problem most when I do to bed before I'm sleepy and would rather be writing and think I have a brilliant idea. I keep thinking about what I will write in and I just don't feel sleepy. Sometimes thinking about something peaceful helps. Another trick is to try reading a very boring book -- like an old textbook in a subject you don't like until it bores you to sleep.

@bagarad Reading a book is common. Happens to most of the people. If I do not get sleep I end up thinking of things which I would never think. Most often in the morning I only scrap my last night thoughts.

I guess people have a problem with shutting their mind off. Sad to say I cannot sleep when it is quiet anymore unless I am exhausted. I have to fall asleep to music or some science program. That is when my mind shuts off.

That's interesting, how it's (specifically) a "science program" -- as opposed to, any other type of program, that helps you to fall asleep. Can you explain the effectiveness of a science program, when it comes to sleep assistance (in your situation)? Is science a stimulating subject, that you dig, and (therefore) it helps to distract you from the everyday things that may keep you wide-awake? Or, not so-much, so, it bores you to sleep (like, white-noise)? lol...

Welcome to my world! However, despite having just said that, I do have to admit that actually I fall asleep extremely easily these days. No idea why ... it could be my constant companion, Exhaustion.

Luckily I don't have to work any more being retired. Mostly I don't sleep because I keep going back over old events that I should have handled differently.

Some nights are harder for me to fall asleep than others. When I am having trouble, I'll pray or read and I find that relaxes me more than most anything. If I'm having a really hard time, my day more stressful than normal and praying and reading don't help, I'll make a cup of chamomile tea. Have a blessed day
