It's time for a new series, in this case Favorite Punk Songs. For #10 we head to London, where The Damned formed in the mid-seventies. The Damned's Debut, Damned Damned Damned (produced by Nick Lowe) was released in 1977 and contains their 1976 single "New Rose." The group's classic lineup: vocalist Dave Vanian, guitarist Brian James, bassist Captain Sensible, and drummer Rat Scabies performed the song. While verifying a few facts on Wikipedia, I learned that "New Rose" was the first single released by a British punk band. It has since been covered by Guns and Roses. The song was a single, alright, but I'm unable to find any chart action, other than the official charts website, which has it at #81 in 1986 (but they don't tell which chart.) "New Rose" is a punk classic, and deserves more accolades than just one band paying homage by covering it. Give it a listen and tell me it's not a great punk tune!

That is pretty old school sounding. I guess it should be considering it is. Love the drums and guitar blend on this. What I call fun punk.

Yeah, The Damned have always been a fun listen. They did a really non-punk cover of Love's "Alone Again Or" that was awesome.

Y'know, Joe Jackson said he was inspired to write "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" when he heard that line "somewhere." I wonder if this is the "somewhere" he heard it!

No that's what I call punk! The drummer Rat Scabies !!!!! is in a frenzy. Yet the lead singer Dave Vanian looks like he escaped from The Hunger with his Goth look.

Oh, he totally went vampire, he even has fangs. Out of character for a punk band, but he's Dave Vanian, so he gets a pass.

I think is an optimal culture to be enjoying more and not for everyone .
