Is there really going to be a President Trump?

In England we're all a little bemused by the US elections this time around, especially as we're just starting to wake up to the fact that Donald Trump actually does have a chance of becoming (well) the most powerful man on the planet.
I'm torn really, I take a small amount of interest in American politics and am finding it increasingly bizarre that a guy like this should be in the running. While I agree with some of what he says, I disagree with much more and have found myself wondering if the American public are behind him because they agree with his stance on the country and the world - or because they are so disenchanted with the way things are going they're prepared to back anyone who talks and seems 'different'.
I hope that doesn't come across as patronising, and as we're in a 'same but different' political point in the UK I am genuinely interested in the thought process behind voting for such a controversial celebrity (other than the fact Hillary is a deceitful glory hunter, of course).
Is 'The Donald' really the cream rising to the top, or is there just no one else to get behind in the US these days?

I really hope he's not elected, but I know so many people who are mesmerized by him. I can't stand how he talks about people. Of course, I don't really want Hillary, either. I wish Bernie could somehow beat her and then I could vote for him. I'm so disappointed in what's going on with the nominations so far. We must be such a joke to other countries. It's humiliating.

I don't think the American people should feel humiliated, but the politics of the US this time around *is* really weird...

@chrisandmark Yes it is. And we just don't know what to do about it all, for the most part. So we'll see what happens when November comes around.

Cream rising to the top-Cranberries and I percent agree. America would be enacting an authoritarian\. Mussolini, or Hitler and many others through out history. The country that supposedly cares most about freedom has become a police state. at the best.

Same as the UK @crossbones27 - for all our talk of democracy (ignoring the fact our head of state is completely unelected, of course) we can't even fart without checking that we're not breaking any statutory laws these days. And god help you if you say you don't like burquas or think there are too many mosques, then your 'opinion' becomes a hate crime...
