#8 in my Favorite Punk Songs series takes us to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where punk pioneers and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer's The Stooges formed. Punk rock started, according to. Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain's punk book Please Kill Me, with The Stooges and fellow Michigan band the MC5. The Stooges didn't sell a lot of records, but they were critical darlings. They are also widely accepted as having the biggest influence on punk rock. "Raw Power" is the title track from their 1973 album, their 3rd. It was performed by the classic Stooges lineup of vocalist Iggy Pop, guitarist James Williamson, bassist Ron Asheton, and drummer Scott Asheton. "Raw Power" was not a hit, but it is a classic. The seeds of punk are right there for the taking.
Song: Raw Power Band: The Stooges Album: Raw Power Year: 1973 Genre: Proto-Punk Lyrics: [burp] Dance to the beet of the living dead Lose sleep baby and stay ...

Infinitely better than the punk we heard in the presentation on "punks vs. cowboys in L.A." yesterday. This is real punk.

@teamfreak16 -- it is quite interesting, considering that during or just after this era of clashing between the "two sides" we had cowpunk with acts like Rank and File springing up everywhere, including L.A.

That does sound like an interesting topic. There is a bar in Downtown Colorado Springs, with a punk-heavy jukebox. But they also have some classic country such as a couple Bob Wills CD's as well, and they get a lot of play. I've more than likely told you this before, if so, disregard.

I love the Stooges. I'm glad I got to see Iggy do this and other Stooges classic.

This is why Iggy Pop is called the godfather of punk.

Or God. In the men's room after his set, Iggy was proclaimed to be God numerous times.
