I am still pondering how to get the best out of earnings while enjoying and having fun here. Though earnings is secondary, it is a bonus!
These questions are in fact running in my mind. Is it determined by:
- the number of discussions or responses?
- length or number of words?
- quality of discussions?
- responses you have for your discussions?
And does pictures posted do a part too?

Your earnings depend on the number of interactions your posts - discussions, responses and comments - receive. This is explained in the Earnings Program FAQs. Pictures don't earn anything though it's possible that adding a relevant image might attract a few more people and encourage them to respond a little more readily..

No idea. We are not supposed to discussion about it too.
Just do your best, and enjoy.
The earnings will add up. The new Mylot allows for passive income. You are not likely to see a large jump in earnings when you are online.
After a good night sleep, you will see that the income has increased overnight.

There's no specific number of words in a discussion here. Be sure to make a good discussion to earn comments and responses here. Discussion with a photo is also nice. Just keep interacting to earn more.

Interaction. And by the definition of interaction you have to refer to myLot guidelines for that.
