Well, I have decided to retire from my state job at the end of the year. So now my thoughts are turning to income when I retire. I will of course have my pension, but I will need to bring in more income. So I am researching work at home jobs, online writing sites and the like - and also considering finding a federal job to work for a few years. Five years after I retire I am eligible to draw on my deceased husband's social security - so it is just basically five years to figure out extra income. Writing is my passion - so that will have to be a main focus of course!

It is hard to earn from writing, unless you want to get into a niche.
I think your problem is more of how to kill time in retirement, especially when your husband is no longer around to keep you company.
If you have a room to rent out, I think that will bring in more stable income than trying to make it online.
Textbrokers is perhaps the only site that can bring you a level of income that is good enough to pay a few bills.
You are basically writing as a ghostwriter.

There are a lot of bloggers earning online and since writing is your passion you can surely earn from there.
