It Has Been A Crazy Week

To say that this past week was crazy is a bit of an understatement. I have not been able to be on as much as I normally like to be and haven't written a new post in quite a few days.
First of all , Thank you to @FrancesRowlinson for the lovely post card from Bamburgh Castle and Lindisfarne. We actually visited there many years ago and I have fond memories of our visit.
My oldest dog Beau is 14. This week he started dragging his back end and not walking on his legs. As you can imagine this is very worrisome. He kept us up for hours the first night with his whining. No he was not in pain, he just whines.
I took him to the vet the next day and over $200 later I had an NSAID and a fish oil supplement as well as ear drops for him and he has been doing much better. I was so afraid that he was going to want to put him down and we have had him since he was 6 weeks old and love him to bits.
We have a split level house which means he was to go up and down stairs constantly and he follows me where ever I go, when his legs are weak I have to carry him and he is a proud dog and it makes him sad.
So we dodged a bullet for now and it is not neurological just a weakness in his rear quarter which these little dogs are prone to, he really needs a grooming and his inability to stand was going to be a major issue.
I had a doctor's appointment Friday morning for me and got a glowing report. My BP is very normal and all the blood work was great so the doctor is happy with my new exercise routine.
This is just what my day Friday was like if you add in our exercise class, lunch out with a friend and cards in the evening at our son's house you get an idea how my week went.
9:30 a.m. Doctor
11:10 exercise
12:30 lunch with Kathy
2:20 Vet appointment
5:30 make mac and cheese for Alex
6:30 bring mac and cheese to son Steve's house
10:30 come back home from card game

Yes ours is on three levels too and while the steps are only 6 in each stairway when you go up and down 20 or 30 times a day!! it gets tiring. especially for an old dog and his owner with bad knees lol

@LadyDuck Yes yours is much worse with all those steps but we use all 3 levels all the time. The family room is on the first level, the kitchen is on the middle level and the bedrooms are on the top level.

@BelleStarr We have 16 steps for each stairway, we mainly use the ground and first floor, not too much the low level, but two are enough.

No it was for this visit, the NSAID itself will be a lot less expensive.

@jaboUK Sorry I didn't realize, it is such a common saying here.

Yes he seems to be responding quite well to the medication but I just got a call this morning that his kidney function is a little off. Probably age related.

Yes I a sure of that but if he thought it was that serious I am not sure what I would end up wanting to do, I don't want my dog to have pain and be miserable.

Our last lab had hip dysplacia badly in both legs - she lived on Deramaxx from 5 years old until 13 1/2. She could run like the wind, walk but sitting was always a problem - and she couldn't jump into the back of the SUV, but at least she wasn't in pain.

Yes that is how I am starting to feel. We also give him glucosamine to help with his joints. Our previous dog had hip issues.

@BelleStarr If it weren't for Deramaxx she never would have made it to 13 1/2. Our current lab is 5 no issues, thank goodness.

It is crazy, I have two grandkids graduating in the ext two weeks and then leaving for the cruise on the 11th. Tomorrow I have to drop 3 dogs off at the groomer, get a mammogram, pick up my prescription, go to water exercise, pick up grandson at school and go get some more postcards. I also need to grocery shop. I am exhausted just thinking about it.

Thank you I know with Beau this whole thing can't have a good ending but at least it is delayed for hopefully a few years.

@BelleStarr I hope so too ... there are quite a few supplements on the market to help with this sort of thing.... or is what the vet gave you a long term treatment.... ?? and yes we know how it ends ... but we can still do something to help in the mean time....

Don't you just hate pets getting old? Herc has been looking old lately but he escaped from his paddock yesterday and was like a two-year-old for a while so I think perhaps my sympathy is misplaced! Glad Beau is responding to treatment.
