The Girls

Canada
June 1, 2016 8:16am CST
My daughter has chickens. Last year she started with six. They are free range and have a large cage for sleeping and a separate room to lay eggs in when they get old enough to lay eggs. The video show you those young birds and how cute they are. They wander around all day enjoying life and eating bugs. But if a human shows up, all the girls come running to say hello and hang out with the humans.
Very friendly chickens

I wish I had chickens but before I'd do that I'd have to create a stronghold to protect them from coyotes, hawks and the human thieves that are in this community, not many but the few we have are those teens that feel it's fun to steal.

Oh so what we call country fowl is a free range chicken. I always wondered, why they continue to call them chicken when they are grown ups...why not hens, or cocks...

@PainsOnSlate ..That is a lot of new words for me...and new information as well...pullets indeed...

Free range just indicates that they are allowed to wander around the yard during the day but these chicks are closed in at night. Young hens are called pullets (I don't why). The species is called chickens, females called hens and males called roosters. But these girls have human names. They are pets with a bonus called eggs...

@PainsOnSlate That's sad - you mean a predator got them?

@jaboUK yes, it was a learning curve, when people are around you can hear them if there is trouble but she left them out when she left to go into town and they think it was a hawk or fox that got two of them. When she got home the chickens were hiding in their cage and two were gone and in the yard, feathers and blood to tell the story.

They are very cute and the eggs are great. They lost a couple of them to something and now makes sure they are in their hen house when no humans are around...live and learn

i've been thinking about getting chickens.but first,i'd need to rebuild the pad outside and buy a dog pen to anchor it to before i even build a coop.we now have coyotes on island thanks to the bridges.

My daughter lost a couple to the coyotes that decided to have lunch. I'm not sure she lets them out ro free range anymore. I think she lets them out if someone is out in the yard with them. And they do go to their pen when told to... trained well.

looks akin to the horses when they're out'n pasture. when the winds blowin' to fierce'n from the wrong direction, makin' my whistle a waste'f time. one'll pop their head'p'n see me, then come runnin' 'cross the field. the others'll soon follow'n hot pursuit. wonderin' if'n i've a treat fer 'em, 'r jest a bit'f lovin' :) beautiful chickens!

My horses would run to the fence to say hello to me too. Loved it. I had company waiting for the school bus every morning.

I like to raise chickens, too, but I do not have such a place to raise them due to the reason that I live in the city. I love especially those chickens when they are very small with only furry leather of yellow, so nice and beautiful. Well, one of my relatives raise many chickens as they live in the country. It is wonderful that you can always have some fresh eggs to eat if you raise the hens by yourself.

It's so funny how much I enjoy stuff about chickens now. I grew up on a farm with chickens and I never even took the time to look at them or appreciate them. Now I do. And I regret my youthful self-centeredness.

I really enjoy them and they are always happy to see me. We had chickens when i was a kid but I didn't have much to do with them and they weren't pets. I had a pet duck though..loved Wibble Wobble.

If I lived in the country like I did as a child, I would have chickens and goats. The chickens would take care of the bugs and the goats would mow the lawn. In exchange for feeding them, they would share their eggs and milk.

I'm surprised my daughter doesn't have goats or sheep. There are a lot of sheep in her area. We had a lamb every spring to mow the lawn ...but we ate it for Easter...but we children didn't know that until we were older..
