Forgotten Poverty

Why is it that when people gain money they seem to become pompous and pretentious? My girlfriend’s grandparents often tell us stories of their younger days. “Back in college we used to live in a studio smaller than this (I live in a studio) and we had to eat sandwiches and tuna to get by.” Now in their older age they seem to have forgotten what it’s like to be without funds as they are rich. One minute they are telling us we need to get out and see the world when we are young. Then the next minute they are telling us that we should be smart and save every penny we can for the future. Pick a side people! My girlfriend and I go garage sailing often as it is a great way to find furnisher, toys, and cloths for cheap. Obviously you can’t make a shopping list as you never know what to expect. You simply take what you can find. We also do this to find some treasures we can flip and sell to make some spare cash on the side (the spare cash basically pays for lunch and our gas that day). Her grandparent’s see no wrong in garage sailing but the moment we tell them we are looking in some thrift stores….. hold up, wait a minute. “Thrift stores are dirty and poor people get their clothes there” says her grandmother. Now where does this kind of thinking come from? When they were young they did everything that we are doing now; minus the technology. Have they really forgotten what it’s like to not be rich, to have normal wealth? It really turns my stomach to see that when someone rises ABOVE they look DOWN on the very same people they used to be. I’ll never be like this. I’ll never use money to make me seem like a better person. I’ll never forget what it’s like to HAVE to go to work for rent and food…. but how do others?

money could change our attitudes, our life and our memory.

It`s the same for most of us, going to work for rent and food then nothing left after that.

It is just that since they were young things have come easier to them and sometimes they forget what it was like back then.

That's kind of confusing to me, I've heard that many times at least when it comes to Thrift Store clothes. But when I wasp pregnant, I shopped thrift stores all the time. I rather pay $5 on something rather than pay $50 on the same pair of pants else where.

I really love garage sale and thrift store. Its the same value for us people who are looking for cheap sake and saved. Yes. There are people who will change once they have lots of money. Living a simple life is the best way to have peace and harmony within you.

I like your attitude about this thing. I notice the same kind of behaviour from people and it's upsetting. They look down on others but they were once in the same position or even worse off.
