While travelling in a public transport I observe many youngsters remain busy with their mobile phone. Some of them watch a video on their mobile while putting on their earphones or some of them just listen to music (audio) with their headphones.
I am of the view that if someone is engrossed in listening to music through headphones, s/he forgets what is happening around him/her. Some of the people keep walking on busy roads or market place while listening to music through their mobiles phones/headphones. Sometimes, their activities could cause inconvenience to others and accident also happen.
I am of the view that if someone is engrossed in listening to music through headphones, s/he forgets what is happening around him/her.
I am not sure in a crowded place or in public transport do they really get to enjoy music through headphones or they just want to fall into oblivion that no one is around them? If someone tries to speak to them, they won't listen at the first instance or till they remove their headphones.
Do you put your headphones/earphones and listen to music while travelling or at a public place and do you enjoy it?

While walking, driving, crossing roads, it's unsafe. I do listen to music while in bus or trains to fall into oblivion.
*whispers* (and to avoid being engaged into conversation by strangers)
I prefer quite!

Yes, true it is unsafe to listen to music through earphones, when one is walking or driving.
If you listen to music in bus or train, then I suppose you limit your listening because you cannot listen it for longer duration.
It is fine if you feel that if you listening to music through your earphones, others (read strangers) won't disturb you unnecessarily.

@Daljinder - I understand your point that while travelling in buses or Metro trains, some of the strangers unnecessarily try to talk to you on one pretext or the other. I also avoid talking to strangers in public transport.

@dpk262006 Ladies have the tendency to start idle talks so, I get busy. During college days I would take out my books and study.
Even guys are like that. I avoid them at any cost!

If it is a long distance travel and i am in a bus , i also put on my earphone to listen to music , though the tone is in modulation . Though , i never use earphone in an open public transport like the jeepney , because it can be grabbed from the window by those snatchers . Besides , i have to see and hear what is happening around me , when i am in a jeepney .

@SIMPLYD - Do you mean to say that you could do multi-tasking (listening to music as well as observing around you)?

If you use headphones, even when waiting for a bus/train, it makes a kind of distraction and you just cannot come to know what is happening around you.

It is wiser that you listen to music in the comfort of your home. Yes, you are right if you happen to use earphones at a public place, you won't realize what is happening around you.

@LadyDuck Yes, imposing a fine proved as a deterrent for erring drivers, who use earphones to listen to music, while driving.
Walking on a street or crossing a street with your earphones on could provd to be fatal.

@dpk262006 We can be fined here if we use the earphones while driving, but also while walking on a public street, just because you cannot hear the cars coming and you can cause an accident.

I am sure that a you are very social and you love to interact with others. Interacting with others (apart from unscrupulous elements) will definitely help you gain more knowledge. While travelling long distance it is better to enjoy the beauty of nature and our surroundings rather than immersing ourselves in listening to music through earphones.

@Ishani08 - Yes, you are right talking to different people is fun, provided we are not hesitant to talk to them and they also talk in a decent manner. Sometimes, you come across very interesting and knowledgeable persons, while travelling.
I remember one small incident. Many years ago, I was travelling in a city bus and was coming back to my home. One aged gentleman was sitting besides me. He was wearing a simple dress. He started talking to me about my studies (I was in class XII at that time). I kept on replying to his questions. When the bus terminated he asked me about an address, which was near my house. I said - "Come along with me, I will guide you and will accompany you till your destination". I helped him locate the address and he was very happy. Then he said to me - "I am Deputy Controller of Examination in Central Board of Secondary Education (C.B.S.E.) Delhi and if you need my help you could contact me anytime". He handed over me his visiting card also.
Although, I did not contact him for any help or information, yet I appreciated his gesture and it made me feel good.

@dpk262006 I totally agree with you and while travelling in public transport we sometimes come across people who ae really fun to talk to. They can entertain you with various jokes and funny real life incidents. Interaction with such people and also other people around who can talk very sensible and help you gain knowlegde, is a thing way better than just being lost in our own world.

ha ha ha ha ...............I loved your answer that those who put on their headphones are actually pretending that they are listening music, they just want to befool you or simply do not want you to disturb them.

Sometimes I will use my bluetooth earphone to listen to the Ebooks. Of course I will not focus on it wholeheartly since I have to also pay attention to the environment. Such as I have to see the cars when I go across the road and so on.

Even of you use your bluetooth device to listen to e-books, I think you just cannot concentrate fully on your e-books. When we are out of home and are using such devices, we need to be always very careful.

I hope these people make allowances and have their wallets and valuables near them and are aware. I don't go to public places. I am in my room most of the time due to social anxiety.

Yes, they need to be very careful about personal belongings while listening to music at a public places. I have heard that people losing their mobile phones, while listening through earphones. They realize only when the music stops and the thief disappears disappeared in crowd with their mobile phone.

To show respect to other people, I think it is mandatory to wear headphones or earphones so as not to disturb the peace of those seated or standing nearby.
Yes, accidents may happen if you are engrossed with what you are listening to and oblivious to your surroundings so better to pay attention when crossing the street or when doing something critical.

It is not necessary that you should have a smartphone to listen to music. Music could also be played even in normal phones, which have facility to store data.
I do not have Kindle. However, I prefer to read books etc. on my smartphone.
I would like to know how it feels to listen to audiobooks on Kindle, instead of reading it? I am curious to hear.

@JESSY3236 It is interesting to hear that you get your audiobooks through Overdrive application. I have searched about Overdrive after reading your response. Thanks for your suggestion. (I'll check your post also in due course).

@dpk262006 I used to listen to audiobooks through my browser or the Overdrive app. The audiobooks I get are through Overdrive. The audiobooks though aren't synced on the Kindle(meaning I can't save where I stopped). The audiobooks are in parts and the parts last a hour each. For more info on Overdrive look at my post about it. And I was wrong on my post Overdrive is available in other countries.

Yes, if they are really listening to music while moving around at public places, then there is risk of accident happening.
However, one of the dear friends [ @sol_cee ] here has added an interesting angle here - she is of the opinion that some people use earphones to pretend that they are listening to music, actually they just want to avoid others.

When I sit on my porch and listen to music I really get into the music and use the big headphones and just sit back and enjoy and my cat loves to come up to me and get her pets in. I do not like the small headphones you get with things because they either fall out or are not good for my ears.

Listening to music while sitting on your porch with your headphones on is altogether a different thing then listening to music at a public place. Do you also listen to music with your headphones on, while at a public place?

I gave up using head phones/ ear phones some time ago. Head phones are too heavy, ear buds don't fit properly, but besides that I feel it's not safe.

@Bluedoll - Yes, it might help you avoiding noisy bus engine sound.
I think if you feel that there is a lot of pollution at public places or while commuting in a public transport, it would be better to use a mask.

@dpk262006 Might be able to drown out those noisy bus engines. It might be nice to stop the smell as well. Do you think a dust mask or gas mask might help?

You listen to music because you fear otherwise you may fall asleep, while travelling. Not a bad idea, I would say.
Yes, one needs to be more alert and cautious while listening, otherwise someone may steal your belongings and you do not come to know because you were too lost in listening to music. (I am not saying that this will happen with you, but I've heard this happening).

If you feel that you remain very alert while listening to music at a public place, then it is fine. However, it could prove to be risky sometimes. It is also difficult to know what is happening around you, when you are lost in your music.
