I Thought My Ring Would Be Safe On My Hand.

Reading Anna's (LadyDuck's) post about nearly losing her ring triggered this memory.
I've always been prone to losing things, so I thought that the safest thing was to wear my engagement ring all the time. On one occasion this didn't prove to be the case.
I was clipping a horse and had got to the tricky part near his head, when he panicked and slammed me against the wall. My hand with the ring on it came into contact with this wall with considerable force, but in my efforts to calm the horse I didn't notice that the ring's central sapphire had been dislodged.
When I did notice - talk about looking for a needle in a haystack! The stable had wood shavings on the floor, overlayed with straw, and though I moved every bit of straw and shavings I never did find it.
When my next birthday came round my husband replaced the sapphire so I was able to wear it again.
Have you had any misadventures involving jewellery?

@Marilynda1225 Yes I don't have any expensive earrings, and I lose them fairly often.

@crazyhorseladycx We really shouldn't wear our good stuff when working with animals, should we?

I lost my silver anklet as a child and never recovered it. I almost lost my gold earring a few months back. I have stopped wearing those now.

yes i lost mine down the drain once and first hubby had to take the curled pipe loose. and one time i found a very nice watch while walking on the beach with a friend. no one was around it could have belonged to and she said oh i have never had a watch and wish i had found it. not having a way to give it back to its owner (it even had sets in it. ) i gave it to her. later hubby said, whats wrong with you? it could have been diamond watch. it was back in the 60's and i was young enough not to care back then. lol.

OH! Lovely roses!! ..
Yes, I also lost a diamond on my engagement ring and we had it replaced.. Good thing it was still under warranty so we didn't spend a cent on it.. But I lost a solitaire diamond dress ring last year.. I hope it's just around here somewhere.. ;)

@jaboUK The engagement ring had a two years warranty ,so it was good that one of the diamonds got lost before the two years ended .. ;)
I have a couple of rose bushes just like those on your photo.. ;)

@epiffanie The rose is called Iceberg I believe. It gives a lovely display every year.

@epiffanie Hi, good to see you again. Your warranty covered you for losing it? That was good. Sorry about the other ring, perhaps it will turn up somewhere.
I'm glad you like the roses - this was from last year, they're still just buds at the moment.

I missed the notification of this post Janet. I am so sorry you lost your original sapphire. I have hit my hand against the wall yesterday afternoon (I lost balance on the stairs), the hand is all black, but I am glad my ring was not there.

During the first big blackout in NYC in the 1960s my engraved cufflinks were stolen---don't ask me how because to this day I don't know!!! Haven't worn French cuffs since!!

@GreatMartin It's far more annoying to have something stolen, than to lose it or have an accident like mine. My husband still wears cufflinks occasionally.

@GreatMartin The one in the picture only has a mild scent, but I have a beatiful yellow 'Peace' rose and the scent from that is heavenly. So heat stops yours from having a scent? I never knew that.

@jaboUK I meant to ask--does the rose have an aroma? Ours don't because of the heat!!

THat's awful, Janet. Good thing your hand wasn't broke in the process. Been meaning to stop by, and now I must change and get ready for work. Will talk again later.

@MarshaMusselman Hi marsha, don't work too hard. Yes, I'm lucky it was only the ring that broke.

@MarshaMusselman That's amazing - if someone recognised it as your mother's you would think they would say something, wouldn't you?

@jaboUK My mom lost some favorite earrings many years ago, but while she was at church. She didn't have any idea where she was when they fell off her ear. Oddly enough a few weeks later when they were leaving church they, her and my dad, found the lost earring on the hood of their car. No one left any note, so we don't know if they were found around there the prior week and they happened to put them on the right car or what.

@jaboUK I guess the only positive is that the ring was relatively inexpensive and the stone was very small. We had next to no money in those days. I have a ring with three little rubies now that I wear on my engagement finger but I've never been a great one for jewellery.

What a story- I bet your hand was sore too from the impact--- It's a neat thought that it could be still there- hiding under something in that same stable or what's left of it.

@MarymargII No chance it would still be there - horses' bedding gets changed regularly so it would have been thrown out when that happened. Anyway this was about 40 years ago!

Things like this do happen. Sometimes when a piece of jewelry wants to go, it will go wherever it is. But at least your husband replaced the sapphire, it was so sweet of him. I've lost my original wedding ring without me knowing how. I have the habit of removing it when washing my hand. My husband bought another one for me.

When I was a little about seven my grandmother bought me a garnet ring. I loved that ring. I thought I was being careful when I would take it off to wash my hands. One time we were out somewhere and I did this. Was called to hurry and I left the ring behind. I was so mad about losing it for when I went back it was gone.

@jaboUK ....If need be I would buy a pretty little keepsake box to put it in. That way when I went to deal with the horses, or other things in life, I had a specia spot for it and wouldn't for get where it was.

@celticeagle Yes that would be the sensible thing to do, but knowing me I'd forget to put it in the box!

@celticeagle That's exactly why I thought it was safer to keep my ring on my finger. If I took it off I'd be sure to forget where I'd put it.

Your roses are absolutely beautiful. I can't say that I have had misadventures with jewelry but I do have a treasured locket that was my grandmothers. I'd be devastated if I ever lost it.

@jaboUK yes its my most treasured & favorite piece of jewelry since it has a picture of my father when he was a baby one side & his father in his Navy uniform on the other side. This was my grandmother's & she gave it to me on my 21st birthday so I wear it often

Oh, my! I would have fainted on the hay! At least your hubs was kind enough to replace the stone. Mine is insured. I doubt that my husband could afford to buy another stone the same size and quality. I've lost earrings - one, an antique diamond and sapphire pin set in platinum that belonged to my grandma (either it was taken off my jacket at the hairdresser or was in a pocket of a jacket that I dropped off at a charity shop), and a gold bracelet that belonged to my mother. I miss those pieces. They were very special to me.

@jaboUK Was so nice of your husband to replace it. I'm sorry you lost the original one.
The only one I can think about was that time I dropped my ring in the shower and it ALMOST went down the drain but I caught it just in time.

@VivaLaDani13 Good job you caught your ring - I lost an earring in the wash basin, but I didn't particularly like it so it didn't bother me.
