When You Eat Apples and Oranges

I was multitasking late last night and getting annoyed that I was tempted to walk out to the store to buy a coffee caramel ice cream cone.
But I remembered the apples and orange in the fridge, so I decided to take a break instead and eat the orange.
At the back of my mind, I remember reading that apples and oranges are among the fruits that can help you stay awake, but I was so irritated I needed to eat something.
Not sure if it's a coincidence, but I did have trouble sleeping last night. It took me an even longer time falling asleep, even though I was tired, and I kept waking up. Or maybe it was my subconscious still stewing and needing an outlet.
Did you ever feel sleepy or awake by certain fruits?

so which one helped you stay awake - apple or orange? fresh fruit or juice?

@ida123 i was just curious if the reason they bought and immediately ate the dalandan was to avoid getting dizzy and throwing up.
i don't like sour food, too, and really like ponkan because they're so much easier to peel than oranges.

oh, so oranges work for you, even if it's just orange scent.
one time, while on a provincial bus, two male passengers boarded and immediately started peeling dalandan. i was surprised because since it's sour so wouldn't that hurt your stomach more and maybe throw up during the trip?

@hereandthere I don't prefer dalandan, I only eat ponkan which is more sweeter. I can't tolerate sour foods, it really hurt our stomach if we consume much of it.

It's the apples. Apples contain natural glucose and the process of digesting glucose helps wake up your body and then keep it that way for about as long as it takes your body to to process the apple.
I have always told my friend to stop drinking coffee and just eat apples instead.

@hereandthere if you do some research orange juice will keep you awake but the real orange won't.

oh, so you're like chungsop who can eat an apple before sleeping without effect.
but why do you choose an apple instead of another fruit or other type of food before sleeping?

@hereandthere I never eat fruits in the evening, but if I eat an apple or an orange in the afternoon I have no problems sleeping... well, I never sleep well, so let's say that I sleep as usual.

@hereandthere I love fruit, just don't have it much, but that could change tomorrow when I finally have teeth again.

@thelme55 so if you want to wake up, you only eat apple and mandarin for breakfast and nothing else? or do you still other breakfast food like bread or have coffee?

Maybe, it's the psychological effect that affects your sleeping. But it true to say that it's not a good choice to eat at late night.

maybe, but at the same time, if you read through the responses, some even eat fruit before going to sleep, so i think it depends on your body, too.

i was like that, too. if i ate a fresh apple, even if just 2 slices, on an empty stomach, it hurts.
i have to make sure i eat it an hour or two after a meal.

@satriani92 i don't like sour food, too, but i don't think the sour taste of the apple is the reason.

Interesting - I've never heard of fruits having such an effect! Growing up, we'd often have orange slices as a dessert - but I don't recall having troubled sleep over it. These days as I am very pooped out by evening, nothing stops me from falling asleep easily

O when I am hungry at night especially after lotting here, just open the freeze to see, easy to take an apple to the mouth lo.
But some say: when you eat fruits in the morning, the value is just like gold, afternoon is silver lo, and night is bronze ,3rd prize lo

@Chungshop you have what's called a 'cast iron stomach.' so lucky. can eat anything, anytime. hahaha!
as a shortcut, i just sliced the orange last night. hehehe.
i prefer what we call 'ponkan' here, which is smaller than an orange, have thinner skin and tastes sweeter.

like you i only eat fruit when i feel like it, even if we have them in the kitchen.
it's interesting from the responses how apples and oranges affect people in different ways, or not at all.
