Per his wishes, the plug on his life support will be pulled today.
Uncle Bernie, my husband's eldest brother, was struck 4 years ago with a multitude of ailments on the day of one of my retirement parties. He has been in an out of hospitals and other facilities since then. This time, he was sent by ambulance and remained on life support since the day before we left for five days in Chicago.
He lived a long and happy life. He began medical school, but didn't have the patience for it. He was best friends with many of the old time English actors and actresses, countesses, and many American actors. His main career was a copywriter, although he traveled the world photographing for magazines, including The Amazon River.
I've known him since I was 19 years old. I'm so sick over this, as is my poor husband, Bernie's wife, and our sons.

@Drosophila My son visited him today to say goodbye. They are preparing him now. My poor husband is so miserable.

sorry to hear this about someone that is close to you. Sometime it is for the best, not that it makes it any easier

Some people are brave enough to decide when it is over. My mother decided when to stop recieving her dialysis and it was the best for her. Celebrate his life as it has been so wonderful.

The wisdom to say goodbye is a skill that we should learn to develop.

What a sad situation- so you're saying he was on life support? And his wishes were not to be kept on it?

It's one of the hardest things to have to do in life, we had to do the same for my mom, pull the plug although it was the right decision.

Is sad that he's had such poor health the last few years, but during that time he has obviously came to realize that he can have some say in finding his eternal peace. I can only hope that his passing is quiet and that he is surrounded by all of those that love him and will support each other. I'm very sorry, sending prayers for his a peaceful passing for him today.

@DianneN I hope that peace comes easily and that his soul is accepted easily. I feel bad for you both, and hope that your husband can remember all of the wonderful times he's spent over the course of his lifetime with his brother and know that their souls will meet again when its time. Hugs for you.

I'm so sorry for your family's loss. It is difficult to see the people we love become ill and, eventually, die. We have had this happen with several people in our family, and it never gets easier. You and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers.

@DeborahDiane It was peaceful. He was given a med to ease the pain from the removal of the respirator. Thanks so much.
