Got my portable a/c finally

I had been putting off getting an a/c unit for the longest time, so I figured I better get one for hot days we are having. I got it at Lowe's last Sunday, as my ex husband was here, and he could set it up for me, and he did. It is a Hisense, 10000 BTU'S . I was only going to get an 8000 BTU unit, but it he guy that waited on me said that I could get a 10000 BTU unit for the same price as the 8000. With a deal like that, I just couldn't pass that up. It is much cooler in my living room now, and I am not getting overheated, and am very comfortable. I even got 10% off too, as my ex husband has his military card, and showed it. I was glad he was here, as it is great when one can save money. I only spent s little more than $250 for it, and I think I really got a good deal, and it does a good job too. It can get as hot as it wants now, as I will be cool.

That really sounds like a good buy. We have a A/C in the wall of both my bedroom and the living room. So one up and one down which is nice.

@celticeagle None of the windows in my house go up and down. I am glad though, as I prefer one on wheels anyway, as I couldn't take the a/c out of the window when it comes time. At least I don't have to worry about that when it is on wheels.

Beings that I have sliders, I couldn't use a window a/c. I like it though that I can wheel the a/c where I want it, so it will be easy to put away at the end of the season, as I just wheel it where I want it and cover it up so it keeps the dust out.

I do have central air, however, the compressor in the heat pump went out and it will cost $2000 to fix it, and I won't pay that much. I reaslly don't need central air anyway, as I have the back two rooms closed off, as I don't use them anyway. I have a small fan in the kitchen and a fan in my bedroom, and that is all that I need. I face the a/c unit so I do get the cool air right on me.

@amadeo I certainly will, and have already. I will have to drain it probably every month, but that isn't going to be a problem anyway. i will just have to unplug it, take the vent out from the back of unit, and wheel it to the front door to dump it.

@rosekiss I see, so with the portable ac where do the condense water go? do you need to empty it every once in a while? isn't it inconvenient thanks for your input since I need an AC myself and contemplating on which one to buy

@ronc510 There is a container inside where the water goes, and so far, I haven't had to empty it. I am hoping I don't have to empty it, but with it on wheels, all I have to do is unplug it, disconnect the vent in back, and wheel it to the front door, and dump it outside. There are some that don't have to be dumped, but I think those are the more expensive ones. I really don't care though, as it won't be a problem at all.

I am not really sure. All I know is, I like mine as after the season, I just wheel it to the back room and store it until I need it again. The way my windows are in my house, I can't use a window unit, as my windows are sliders, and not up and down. My son has a window one, and he likes his, and I have been to his house when it was running, and I was comfortable. I think they pretty much do the same thing, as it just depends on how big or small the room is you are trying to cool.

I have beewn, as we did have a few hot days already, and it really felt good when it was hot. Right now, it is cooler than it was, and I am happy about that, as I don't like a lot of heat, especially at my age.

@DianneN Right now, it really feels good as it is warm outside and cool where I am at. I am enjoyi8ng it so much, that when it really gets hot and stays hot, I will be cool, and not heat up. I hate getting hot as it really makes me so uncomforable.

It only cooks the living room, as thar is where I spend most of my time, and I need to stay cool while there. I have a fan in my bedroom that runs day and night. It will be cooler tomorrow though, so it will be much cooler, in fact 20 degrees cooler. It will certainly feel better, and I shouldn't have to run the a/c as much as when it is very hot.

Yes I am, and it sure does feel good too. Of course I stayed a lot cooler when my central air worked, but having to prlace the compressor for $2000 is something that I am not willing to do at all. I figured this would do the trick as I spend most of my time in the living room anyway, and that is where I really need it. I have a fan in the kitchen, and one in my bedroom, with the other two rooms closed off, since i don't use them.

All of my windows i the house are sliders, so I can't put an ac unit in them, so I figured the portable one would work just as well, and it certainly does. I am staying cool when it gets realy hot outside. Since summer has just started, we have a lot of hot days coming, and so I am prepared for them now.

We were in the 90's yesterday, and will be in the 90's again, here in Oregon. Without the a/c, I would be so hot that I just couldn't keep cool. It really seems to work well, and cools me off, and the room is much cooler than if I didn't have it.

I decided that I suffered from the heat long enough. With heat pumps, there is way to much to go wrong, and I have put a lot of money into it already, and it is only 9 years old. I really don't need central air anyway, as i can get by with using fans in the other rooms and the a/c in the living room. I have the back two rooms shut off too, so they won't stay cool, but I don't use them anyway.

I used to live in the midwest, and there, you can't ge by without it at all, as there is such high humidity. Here in Oregon, we don't have high humidity, so it doesn't seem as bad, but it can still get really hot at times.

Only time will tell if the electric bill will go up. It it does, it shouldn''t be that much. When I used the heat pump, the electric then, was high every summer. Not using it is the best thing, but then I can't anyway, as it costs $2000 foir a compressor, and that is insane. I have done without air conditioning for two years now, and i figurred I would get a portable one to help keep me cool.

@rosekiss I also keep everything closed so I can be cool. I don't need icy coolness and it only cools the living room and kitchen. It says 'portable' but it needs to be kept near a window for the exhaust fan.

Wow, that is a lot of BTU'S. None of my rooms are big enough to use that size of a/c unti. Although my living room is the biggest room, it still isn't gigantic/ The a/c unit is doing its job though, and that is all that matters to me. I do have a fan in the kitchen and one in my bedroom, and the back two rooms I keep the doors shut and the blinds closed as well. I don't use those rooms, so I might as well keep them closed. One is basically storage, and the other one has my printer, modem , router, and a book stand.

I am too. I certainly couldn 't have done it myself, and I planed it so that when he came down, I wold buy it, as he lifted it and ut it in the car for me. Of course, I will have to put it away for winter, but that shouldn't be to hard to take the vents out of the window. Now, that it is set up, I will just leave it togewther and store it for winter, and next season, I will just put it back into the window agan. I will be able to wheel it into where I am able to store it for winter, so that is ideal too.

It has wheels so that it can be moved from room to room, although I am not moving it from where it is right now, as it is staying there until the season is over. It will be much easier to put it away, since it is on wheels, as I can just wheel it to where I want it, and also when I empty the water out of it, I can wheel it to the front door and just empty it.

I bought an EdgeStar portable A/C a couple of years ago. They forecasted a heatwave with 100º days so I went to Home Depot, Lowe's and Sears but they were all sold out of any that I thought would do the job or any within the price range I was willing to pay. So I got on the internet and found the EdgeStar listed on the Sears website. The thing that I didn't like about it was it stated it would take up to 3 weeks to be delivered. I figured the heat spell would be over by the time I got it. I showed up in 3 days. I like the fact that it can be moved from room to room.

Yea. that is the great thing about it. Although I can move it from to room, I will leave it as I need it in the living room the most as it is the room that gets the hottest. I would have to take the vent out of the window, and since it took time to get put in the window, I will just leave it where it is at. I have two rooms shut off, and a fan in teh kitchen and one in my bedroom. I will be prpared for more heat, that is for sure.

@theBlock Up until this year, that is all I had too, but my living room heats up especially when it gets really hot outside and during sunny weather. There isn't a lot of insulation in the attic, so the heat will come down from the attic, and it would get really hot in the house. In fact, I have two rooms completley shut off, in the back of the house, as I don't use them, as one has my yarn stash in it, and the other one is where my printer, modem and router are. If I need anything in those rooms, I just get what I need and then shut the door. It really does make a difference too.
