Blogging As A Worthwhile Enterprise

One of my goals that I never get too is starting my own blog. I'd love to do it and have a niche in mind but never seem to start the project. There are many things to consider. Some people tell me that it is better to pay for your own domain with a blog rather than go to one of the free ones. A writer I admire uses Weebly and pays- about $8.00 per month for the privilege- which really is not much. The other deterrent is how to go about it as I'm very computer challenged and don't know how to use those sites that help you create fabulous graphics, etc. Do any of you guys blog and what do you think is the best way to go about it.

I use Blogger for free and honestly, it takes a long time to make money and if you have to pay $8.00 a month, you will be losing money for a long time. One of the senior editors at Helium and I both have blogs on blogger and so does Jeanne Baney. Blogger is very user friendly and I can get on the phone with you and walk you through it. The editor did it for me and I was a real beginner. I now have 5 active blogs.

We are in the same boat. I had wanted to start a blog of my own as well but have always found a good reason not to. LOL! Perhaps, this year will be it! ***fingers crossed***

I just feel like it's a huge undertaking, even though I am really interested.

@MarymargII true. It will take a lot of time maintaining a blog especially if it is just starting.

@allen0187 I know- that's what makes me hesitate although I'd like to have one. Gives a writer a kind of home. :)

I would love to start a blog very soon because I have a goal in mind that I want to achieve in the future. I want to have my online job in the future that will allow me to work and travel at the same time. I love travelling and I love books, so I guess my blog will be all about those. I have read that Wordpress is good if you want to have online earnings in the future. At the moment, I am just trying to find the time when can I start my blog especially now that my boyfriend already helped me out with my own laptop. All I need is to start writing. Let me know once you started your blog already.

@MarymargII I am not sure about technicalities in blogging. I have been studying travel blogs and they recommend to use wordpress. I guess that @cmoneyspinner can give us a useful suggestion about what platform to use when it comes to blogging.

That sounds like an interesting niche and it could be successful. People are saying "Blogger' is good on this post so I may start with that and then graduate to a paid domaine site- Problem is I know when I start it- I'll run into some snags so need my son or daughter around to walk me through it. That makes the timing a bit of a challenge. I wonder if Blogger uses Wordpress as I'm familiar with the format.

I used to have a blog a long time ago and gave it up as it is a lot of time spent on this to get some content and traffic. I gave up. I was paying for my domain name, my blog fees. I can't even remember where it was.

I have a free one through wordpress. I may someday get a domain name, but right now I'm liking the free one.

I have a 'free' blog which my son set up for me but now I've forgotten the password. I'll get back to it one day.

@MarymargII Luckily my son set it up. There is no way I'd be able to do it on my own.

@JudyEv ha! Neither would I- my son is out of my area for about an hour's drive and when he visits, it's never long enough to pin him down for that- but he would do it for sure. Need to invite him for a longer stay---ha!

It's a little difficult to establish your own blog and create traffic. Once you're able to accomplish it then it goes pretty smooth!

Yes it's a serious and time consuming exercise.

You may start with a free blogging service but ultimate goal should be to have your own domain. Btw, writing skills is all that matters for blogging, technical expertise is not much of a hurdle.

Thanks @baman I think you're right- I may start without it and work my way up to it.
