How did you start your love for reading

Can you remember when you started your love for reading? Ever since I was young I have always loved reading. I don’t remember how this passion for reading started. But what I do remember is that when I was in elementary (primary) school, “Reading” is one of my favorite subjects. In the Philippines, back then Reading and Writing are compulsory subjects for students from Grades 1 to 4. (ages 7 to 10 years) I distinctly remember back then, after enrollment (usually two and a half weeks before classes start), we were issued books that will be used for the entire school year. I will pick out the Reading textbook, which is filled with short stories and then read them. By the time school starts, I have finished reading the entire textbook. This passion for reading continued on to high school, where I borrowed books from the school library, then until college, when reading was a self-prerequisite and very indispensable to get good grades. Reading for me is not even a hobby, it is a passion. I will never get tired of reading. I think this passion will never end until my last breath. How about you, do you like to read? ^_____^

Another big reader like me, Yay! Nice of our parents to encourage reading at a young age. Like you, there have been times when I had been in hiatus in reading. I was hooked in cross-stitching for a time, so I lessened my reading. But, I when I saw a book that interests me, then I pick up where I left off and start reading again. ^___^

@MGjhaud Yes cross stitching, another hobby that gave me severe eye strain and made me wear glasses. Agree with you, that whatever interests us, reading will always have its first pull on us.

When I was in grade school, I hate reading but teacher always call me and have me read in front of my classmates. When I was in high school, a classmate of mine let me borrowed her pocket books. I was amused by the cover because it's a handsome guy. Until I'm fond of reading books that has a good story. Don't care if the author is not a known author as long as the story makes me forget the reality.

Agree with you on that Bhem. I used to read Mills and Boones during high school. We also used to have the tagalog pocketbooks here in the Philippines. I can read those in one sitting LOL

Ah reading. Feeding the mind. It's never been so much fun to overeat. My first remembered experience with reading is choosing to stuff myself with several short stories by Edgar Allen Poe when I was around seven or eight. I don't remember the stories that day, many many years ago, but I do remember not wanting to go to sleep that night. Well actually it wasn't the sleep part that I feared. It was being in my room alone in the dark. I wanted to stay up in front of the TV with my parents but they wouldn't have it. My dad did leave my door open with the hall light on. I don't recall how long it took to fall asleep. To this day Edgar Allen Poe is still one of my favorite authors. I stopped reading several years ago after a major life change which mostly preoccupied my mind but I'm back at the dinner table again. Eating lightly but preparing to gorge again. ‹(°¿°)›

So glad you shared your first reading experiences. I do not remember if I have read Edgar Allan Poe stories. I may try them one of these days. I am sure that major life change has been a blessing for you, albeit in disguise or not. Nice to know you are back to reading again. ^____^

I started before going to school. My mother bought me comic magazines and read them aloud while inside the comfort room. Lol

@sunbeams hahaha yeah, it might seem awkward but we're used to it. My mother has her own magazines and prayerbooks there and I used to have my comics.

I have always loved reading too. I didn't have a great childhood so my books made me feel like I was in a better world and it made me feel better.

Nice, another kindred reading spirit. Yes I agree with you. Reading is an escape to a far better world (unless its a horror or crime/suspense story). My childhood years are good. Sorry to hear yours wasn't that great. But, at least reading provides a diversion or a leisure only you can cherish and enjoy.

Books are some of my favorite things in the world! If I let myself, I could spend all my time reading. But then comes those pesky things like cleaning the house and cooking and all that needs to be done.

I absolutely agree with you. If I had a wish, I would also like to just spend all of my time reading. But, I have to live, so I need to work, and do household chores too. Anyway, after doing all of these, I reward my self with reading my favorite books. ^____^

I love reading it actually started when I read my first book at the bookstore. I believe it was in the 90's. And I've learned that I like nonfiction books.

Ah another book lover. Yes, bookstores are a great place to start reading, and spending haha. It's good that you like non-fiction books. You learn more from them rather than fiction stories, which are my preference. I have just posted another discussion on my favorite books. You may care to share your faves. ^____^
