So many things have changed and music is one of those things. Music in the 80's and 90's seem to be filled with meaningful lyrics, not saying that music in today's era isn't meaningful, a lot of it is difficult to understand. Entertainers and singers seem to have more emotions and everyone could relate to the songs that were created in the 80's and 90's. A lot of people prefer old school music . I must admit that I'm more in tuned with old school music but I can appreciate some of the new music. If the lyrics make sense and the melodies are right then I may listen to the new school music.

My 12 year old son told me he prefers the music in the 90s coz the lyrics are way more meaningful than the music these days.

Its because of the competition and marketing, in the old days there were less companies to tell artists and performers what they can or can't do, while today most companies would prefer their artists to create more attractive, catchy and popular music with more boom but with less depth.
Popular music today is more about the entertainment than food for the soul, although there are better and deeper songs today compared to the old school music.
These songs are usually indie bands, starting up artists or foreign bands.
