One wonders what is meant by a religion?? Is it defined by the rules of a particular sect that one follows or is it something else rather something more than that else??
Quite often what we profess as religion binds us. However, the main purpose of religion is to free one's self from all boundations and boundaries and embrace humanity as a whole. When abiding with certain rules of any religion be it Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism or Christianity or Islam or any other religion (mind you that these rules in most cases are dictated by the religious middlemen and are not deciphered by the religious learners by themselves by reading of scriptures), we bind ourselves and stop being human and distort the main of aim religion.Actually, in fact what we profess is only rules of a particular sect rather than religion. Opinions welcome.....

"Religion,is the greatest of all means for the establishment of order in the world and for the peaceful contentment of all that dwell therein." Bahá'u'lláh
Love and unity, justice and trustworthiness are some of the elements of most religions.

I have often wondered this what is the role of religion? How the world would have been without any religion? Still searching for the answers...
But in todays world it has only two role I quote from a movie "Either it makes you helpless or makes you a terrorist"

I agree with you Sushmita in a way. I would like to add as stated in the gravamen of my initial post that when "religion makes you helpless or makes you a terrorist", its not religion in the real sense but only following rules propagandized by frivolous interpreters of that particular sect.

@sheetgautam79 So what according to you religion is?
Also do you think God and religion are co-extensive?
Is it possible to someone to follow a particular religion but follow a God from another religion?
Contray to the fact that religion is something which we are designated by birth I believe it's about the faith you repose in and you should follow the religion you have faith in. It should be choice and not a mere designation.

Its very difficult to define the word "religion" because of the basic framework inculcated in us at the time of our birth in a particular sect as we would identify the particular practices of that sect as our religion and when we do start practicing those practices, our cognition lets us to have belief in those practices and their fruits.
In my personal belief, everyone has potential God inside and religion is what someone find in congruence with the human values of love, trust, helping other and other altruistic behaviours. Religion is having good will towards others. To be religious means to be true to oneself and one can only be true to one self when he is a true human being- a compassionate and loving creature who loves and cares for everyone including himself/herself for if he cannot take care of himself/herself, s/he won't be able to take care of any other being. In Hinduism, there is a concept called "karuna" i.e. compassion for every being, in Islam, there is provision of "Zakat" i.e keeping aside 10% of one's income for the purpose of charity, In Sikhism, there is "Sewa, Simran, Satsang" i.e. service, reciting God's name and keeping company of good people. If one even being atheist engages in these practices, I will consider him to be religious.

my "religion" is Christianity, but I don't define myself as being religious. I prefer to have a relationship with my creator, and learn directly from Him. Yes, I go to church, but the rules and stipulations condoned by the "churches" are unclear sometimes, so I go straight to the source.
