Money doesn't buy happiness, but it sure helps.

They say money doesn't buy happiness, and while in most ways that's true. Money doesn't buy love, friendship, or health. You can be poor and be happy, or at least I'm pretty sure you can. I know I'm happy sometimes, and I am poor most of the time. Happiness is a state of being I guess, and we're only as happy as we allow ourselves to be, I guess happiness relies on us.
The thing is while money doesn't buy happiness it helps. I'd be a lot happier if I had money. If I didn't have to struggle. I know it doesn't buy the most important things in life, but if I didn't have to worry about things like bills, and other expenses I'd be able to focus more on the things that really do make me happy. I guess while money isn't the root of happiness, it helps you worry less about some things.
Money can also pay for experiences you wouldn't have without it. It pays for things that help bring you happiness. having things isn't what makes us happy, it's what we do with those things that makes us happy. Like family vacations, it's the family part that brings the real happiness. My child having toys and books aren't the root of his happiness or mine, it's the things he does with them. Like him using his imagination or learning to read.
My son being able to have a decent education to secure his future would make me happy, money buys those things. Ultimately we're responsible for our own happiness, and while money isn't what gives us happiness it can be helpful in our quest for happiness.
I know if I didn't have to worry about financial issues I'd be a lot happier, because I wouldn't have to worry about as much, I'd still worry, but I'd have less to worry about.
I grew up poor, and as a child I was happy, so I know money isn't everything, but boy would it help.

Money can't buy health but it can buy the finest health care possible. Money brings security and less worry which brings peace of mind which contributes to general well being. Eating healthy is expensive and money can buy the good healthy stuff without straining the grocery budget. Money means not having to fret over filling the gas tank.
The cliche "money isn't everything" was created to placate the poor and make them feel better. Only a fool doesn't believe money cannot add happiness and improve life.

I don't believe it buys physical happiness, I just believe it contributes to it. I mean you can be rich and miserable. It's not everything. As a kid we were poor, I didn't get to do a lot but I was happy, but I didn't have adult worries either. It's not even really about physical things, we can live with very little and be happy, but it is about being able to not have to worry about things. Really what makes us happiest are the people in our lives. You can be the richest person in the world and if you don't have love or friendship you'll have a difficult time being happy. I just think money helps. When you don't have financial worries it makes life a lot easier.

@JohnRoberts True, but if you're rich and miserable you're still miserable and clearly the money isn't helping any, so it's kind of a waste.

@sissy15 Better to be rich and miserable than poor and miserable!

I agree, but I do think that having money helps relieve financial stress which helps make you happy. Not having to worry about whether you'll be able to pay bills, and actually being able to afford to do things with the people you care the most about. I mean you can be happy poor, and you can be miserable rich, but it's sometimes difficult to be happy when you're worried about whether or not you'll be able to keep the lights on.

For happiness, even if you have money, in the end it's all about how you spend the money. But of course, having the money itself is a step forward towards happiness in this life.

I believe it helps, but I don't believe it's everything. It's not necessarily how you spend it, it's not having to worry about it I think. If you don't have to worry about how your bills are being paid, or where your next meal is coming from and you can just enjoy life without worrying about those things then that's where the happiness comes in. It's in not worrying about it.
