It seems that oceans, seas and stretches of water unite us all. I've thoroughly enjoyed the discussions initiated by @Inlemay and responded to by so many, especially those who have posted ocean photos as part of their comment on my last post.
It reminded me of the old postcards that were once exchanged, featuring Hands Across the Sea. The postcard shown here is not a true Hands Across the Sea, but is typical of this theme so popular in the early 1900s. These postcards always showed clasped hands, such as this one, and often modes of transport, especially sailing ships. This postcard was posted in New Zealand in 1908, to another NZ address.
Many of these postcards were sent to New Zealand in the early 1900s, to family members and friends who had moved so far from their homes in England.
The resurgence of interest in sending postcards around the world, on sites such as Postcrossing, and even here on myLot where members are exchanging postcards, is once again a way of uniting us all, no matter where in the world we live.
Writing and exchanging thoughts here on myLot is definitely a wonderful way of extending international friendships and reaching out our hands to connect with others across the sea.

The current popularity of postcards came as quite a surprise to me. I recall seeing a discussion here on the subject and within days many members were discussing various postcards.
Oddly enough postcards are proving to be very difficult to find here in Turkey. I would have expected a resort area to be littered with them.

@Asylum not necessarily. As part of our business we deal in vintage postcards, mainly those sent in its hey day between 1904 and 1920, and make a quite good living from it. The postcards were lovingly kept in albums and publishers were quick to respond to the market. We still buy amazing collections from that period. English postcard collecting is very strong.

@crazyhorseladycx Well you know that was because I didn't want to impose! The cost of sending them would probably have been prohibitive as well.

@silvermist yes, you just need to look at an international site like ebay to see how strong collecting them is.

@crazyhorseladycx I think I'm lucky, NZ is geared towards the tourist trade. Tourists love our green environment and so postcards are a plenty!

I used to receive post cards from friends when I was in high school and they went on vacation with their families. I used to save them all and would buy post cards to keep as a collection. I think I eventually threw them out a few years ago. That is neat mylotters here exchange post cards.
