Just establish yourself as a good pilot and rack up as many hours as you can, and dont worry about discrimination. As far as racking up hours, hit up local photogrophers and see if they are interested in Aerial Photogrophy, you fly them around and they usually pay for the fuel. Take some friends up and have them cover fuel... Or just go rent an aircraft and fly for the heck of it. How long does it take? If you go from no license to ATP (Air Line Transport Pilot, the highest FAA license you can hold) depending on where you go it can take two or more years.
