It's time for a new series, and at the urging of @JohnRoberts, I'm going with Favorite Cover Songs. Keep in mind that I'm not saying these are any better or worse than the originals, they are just covers I enjoy.
For #10, we're off to Manchester, England, birthplace of The Chameleons.
Known as The Chameleons UK here in the States, post-punk, guitar group The Chameleons formed in 1981, and are one of my all-time "Never attained the popularity they deserved" bands.
The Beatles' classic (and my favorite Beatles tune,) "Tomorrow Never Knows," is a highly influential song from their 1966 album Revolver. It's a trippy, psychedelic number in which, according to legend, LSD played a huge part, from John Lennon's lyrics to the psychedelic soundtrack.
The Chameleons, on the other hand, were never exactly trippy during their existence. Instead, they brought energy and an almost shoegazer vibe to the song.
Available only on the CD issue of their 1986 album Strange Times, The Chameleons' version was basically called the best of all cover versions by the All Music Guide. Keep in mind that the song has been covered by numerous bands over the years. I haven't heard them all, but based upon what I have heard, I have to agree.

Oh, yeah. Phil Collins, Jimi Hendrix, David Lee Roth, The Mission (my favorite band,) among many others.

I am not familiar with this song period. It's not typical 80s new wave. There's more of a punk feel.

Yeah, The Chameleons really never sounded all that new wave, honestly. They kind of had their own thing going. Great band, though.
