My first experiment since returning from jail

I have my balcony table and chairs sanded down and have started oiling them. This is a part of my Spring ritual, as I mentioned in previous posts. Each year, I try a different oil, just to see which will hold up best against the hot Summer sun. This year I decided to try Watco Walnut Danish Oil, as a friend had given me some, and it's a product I haven't used that often. I started by doing one of the slats on one of the chairs. It looks good to me, so I think I'll use it on the table and both chairs. What do you think? Pretty enough?

I just did a few more slats. Each one looks slightly different, but I think the table and chairs will look nice overall.

@TheHorse Even if the slats look slightly different that will be a kool new look.

@Marcyaz I think it's going to look nice. I think I like the walnut slightly more than last year's red mahogany.

That looks beautiful, pony! I like the way the wood grain is brought out in that slat. Good job! That must be the slat your friend sanded down for you!

@TheHorse You're welcome! That is awfully nice of you to do for him, pony! I was almost sure you would let him stain it if his parents had no objections, but you never can tell.... some people would, others wouldn't.

Thanks, Daddy. I think I left the one he sanded unstained so far, so he can do it if his mom lets him.

Looks good as it brings out the grain in the wood. Paint peels sometimes but I think stain will last longer? Plus it looks so much better. Okay, you were in jail. Wooden bars?

@jaboUK I actually like it when it's partially done. I like the process as much as the product. I'll try to attach a picture of the table when it was half-sanded. It's half-oiled now.

I do too. I think it's a bit more subtle than the red mahogany was last year.

That is so pretty. I couldn't make a lovely chair like that. I like natural wood color.

Maybe I'll do a couple more slats right now. It's an excuse to get some morning sun.

It looks good. Hard to identify the kind of wood from the photo. I would guess a variety of oak but I'm not certain.

@TheHorse There are lots of choices. Personally if I made it out of a hardwood I would have chosen maple over oak. I would have preferred a softwood though. Cedar is more rot resistant although Spruce would have been cheaper.

I'm not either. I don't even know what tables (especially outside tables) tend to be made of.

I always like the look of wood. They're painting the wooden fence beyond our parking area, and I wonder why they didn't go with some kind of protective stain.

On my coasters, it lets the grain show through nicely.

Years ago I knew a man who loved to refinish antique oak pieces, but he always put Watco Danish oil in walnut on them sometimes as many as eleven coats before he put a final coat of paste wax. I have a friend who loves the Watco Teak oil and I have some on hand for a couple of projects I am going to do.

Perhaps I'll experiment with more coats. I usually just do one or two. For my coasters (made of light Spruce), I might do four or five. I'm not sure what wood the table is made of. It was given to me.
