TE3N...an emotional thriller

I saw the movie TE3N recently, the movie is a suspense drama , but at the same time it is emotions that is the core of the movie. The emotions of loss, pain, revenge, helplessness, vulnerability and most importantly guilt. The story starts off with us knowing about kidnapping and murder of Amitabh Bachchan's grand daughter and the feeling of loneliness and guilt that he carries within his life. 8 years later , another child is kidnapped in the same manner. Who is the kidnapper, is it the same kidnapper, what is the motive and what was the motive then, are these kidnappings interconnected...there are lot of puzzles, mysteries, questions that the movies weaves around beautifully and keeps the viewers apply their own logics, perceptions and we become the part of investigation journey. By the intermission, one of the twist is revealed ,which comes as huge surprise, and gradually moves towards the climax, which again was unpredictible and the identity of the kidnapper could actually take you by surprise. So TE3N has all elements of a good suspense film, it has mystery, the identity of kidnapper/killer does gives you a feeling of shock or surprise, and its very methodical in its approach, but there are few problem areas too. The first half of the movie is too slow for a thriller, it takes its own sweet time to capture the feel of Kolkata, to build up its characters, the emotional part has been given great emphasis and as a result it sometimes dampens the suspense part. Secondly, though the identity of kidnapper/ killer comes as a big surprise, the motive is not satisfying. For a brilliant suspense movie, the motive should be a gripping and satisfying as the revealing of the identity. This is one area where movie suffered after a fabulous build up to climax. Still movie is very good considering the quality of thrillers in bollywood. It is not an edge of the seat thriller, but a slow emotional suspense thriller. It can keep the viewers guessing till the end and that is what we expect from good suspense movie. Director Ribhu Dasgupta has captured Kolkata amazingly, the rustic look to the city, the Durga Pooja, the local dialect, every frame has been captured with utmost authenticity. Performance from Amitabh Bachchan, Nawazuddin , Vidya Balan and other supporting actors is top notch. If you like thrillers and if you are comfortable with slow paced movies, TE3N will not disappoint you.
