Shoes failure

First mistake : I bought a pair of summer canvas shoes 3 days ago while it was raining. Second mistake : I went outdoors this evening when a thunderstorm was threatening with my nice new canvas shoes. To reach my goal faster, I decided to cross a public park near my home. It started to rain cats and dogs. I accelerated and found a new river and a new cascade at the bottom of the park... third mistake : I should have not forgotten Newton's laws. I feared to not be able to touch bottom, and I had to come back home wet like a sewer rat. Do you think that I can exchange my wet canvas shoes for hip waders, or should I consider to buy a kayak ? Have you seen the sun recently ?

In my teen years it didn't take long to work out that espadrilles were not weather proof.

@boiboing Done, thank you. They sold me these ones as "comfort" shoes, and they are not comfortable at all when they are wet.

There are years that I have not bought espadrilles. These shoes have shoelaces and a rubber sole, but they were not made to cross a river. I hope that they will not shrink too much.

@topffer I think most people only need one wet day to grow out of espadrilles. If you stuff your shoes with scrunched up newspapers to keep the shape as they dry out, they might survive. It's worth a try.

They way you described the weather, I wasn't sure if you were talking about your home (France, I presume), or my city in Florida! It's been raining cats and dogs here for the past two days, and it looks like today is going to be more of the same! By the way, I think I ruined my new canvas shoes also, when I got caught in the rain a couple of days ago!

It is somewhere comforting to see that I am not the only one under the rain. This is the worst month of June that I remember : usually it is sunny and we have drought, but this year we have seen the sun only 4 days, including a bit today, and we have floods and hay.

@topffer At this time of year, we usually get rain every day, mostly in the afternoons. We went an entire week with no rain at all, and then the past two days it has been raining non-stop. Very unusual for it to be that way. So far, today seems pretty nice, so maybe we'll finally be back to our normal summer weather patterns.

@moffittjc I wish you so. A rainy summer would not be funny at all, especially in an area like yours where many people are going for vacations.

Wow, this looks like the kind of weather to stay at home and sleep in. I think the birds are laughing at you soaking wet.

@topffer haha, you might as well take a shower in the rain! You sure can save water in this way.

@scheng1 Not only I took a shower, but I also washed my clothes. I had also to put a wool jacket in the dryer when I came back.

Lol, it would have been a good idea to stay at home, but I could not imagine that : I read that we had more rain in an hour than in a full month.

Bad luck for you wearing that canvass shoes and it rained . Surely it would get soaked and damaged .

They survived to the rain, but I had serious doubts when it happened. It was a very bad move to go outdoors this day. I read that it rained more in an hour than in a full month.

@SIMPLYD They are German shoes, but relatively cheap. I dried them slowly with paper inside, and I think they had luck.

Yup, saw the sun just this morning although with the rainy season here in Manila, the sunny days are numbered. I'll settle for a kayak. It will keep you drier than the hip waders.

@topffer enjoy the summer. We will be seeing the sun in the morning until lunch time. Rain showers and thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon. That is the forecast for the remainder of the week.

I was for sure ready to buy a kayak when I saw this new river. We have seen the sun last week and maybe we will have a summer finally.

I would consider buying a kayak. If the French summer and the Danish summer look the same way you will need it I am sitting in our enclosed patio while I am writing this. There is heavy rain in the central part of Denmark where I live, but I shouldn't complain, according to news the situation is worse in Copenhagen

At least I am not the only one to have not seen the sun this week. I am living at the top of a hill and I do not risk to be flooded. Can Copenhagen be flooded ?

@Porcospino I have been too much optimistic when I bought these shoes. I have also sunglasses in my bag all the year, but it is only because I need a pair of glasses to drive, according to my driving license, and I have always two pairs in my bag, normal and tinted. Wow, I did not knew for Copenhagen. I hope that you will not have floods this year. Paris was not far to have a major flood 2 weeks ago, but the Seine stopped to rise at a relatively safe level, and the water damaged only basements and a few streets near the river in Paris.

The sun is out today for the first time in quite awhile. I bought an inexpensive pair of canvas shoes. The quality was poor to say the least. They lasted me all of eleven days. I did write a negative review online about them back then.

These shoes are also not expensive, and I will not complain if they shrink. I would not have expected such a shower, but it is all my fault to have taken them to go outdoors when the sky was black. The only complaint is that they sold them to me as "comfort" shoes, and that they are not comfortable at all when your feet are wet because you had to cross a river with them.

@koopharper It is true that you rarely see a river inside a home, but I would not wear a pair of shoes with laces at home, only carpet slippers.

I read in a newspaper that we had more rain in a few minutes than during a month : 90 mm. It was the bad moment to go outdoors with canvas shoes. The shoes are dry now and do not seem to have suffered too much.

This is of course my opinion only. Even if it was the same day that I brought a product, if it was my fault, than no I would never return the item. I return items if they are not working, but if it is my own fault, ummm I just learn from that experience. Most people explain that, don't worry the store will get the money from the manufacture, but I just refuse to do that. I have a sister-inlaw that abuses return policy's. Lets just say she bought a computer and 6 months later it is no longer under warranty and the store will not allow a return and maybe somehow she broke it or maybe it just failed. She will go buy the exact same make and model and then return the old computer and she of course keeps the new one. Of course the above was an example: but I have seen her do it with coffee makers, lawn mowers, etc. My opinion is you treat this as a learning experience.

Lol, I was joking : we have had a horrible winter and spring with rain every week and several floods, and it is indeed not the fault of the shoes seller. They are drying now in my bathroom. I hope that we will have a better summer. I buy a lot of small things on Ebay, and I have returned an item only once, because the electronic broke down after less than a week, and it was not my fault. For computers, your SIL should buy better computers instead of tricking the seller to obtain the same computer that will break down after six months : I buy only laptops in pro range, I keep them 5 years until they become obsolete, and I never managed to kill one.
