Public Domain Free Images

First I realize I have not been perfect with finding out if an image that I posted is public domain, etc. Usually I post pictures that I have taken from my Iphone, so I am safe. About 10 years ago I was very involved with Photoshop competitions and as always you had to be very careful on public domain pictures versus the ones found on the internet. I found my old list and made sure the sites still exists and those are listed in this discussion. So what is a public domain image? First I have had friends answer: "It is images you find on the Internet". No! If you do not know 100% the image is public domain, your best bet is to skip that one and find one that does. The good news is that there are a lot of sites dedicated to public domain photos. Each site will have it's rules on what you can use it for (some may say you can't use it for commercial use, etc.). and what you can do with them. Now if you know who owns the rights of that photo, technically you can permission from the owner to use the picture even if it is not public domain. I have done that before and stated I needed to use this photo in an online contest, etc. and they write back granting me to use the photo or tell me that it is a fee. So what if you just go to google images and grab any old photo (hey I have done that, but that does not mean it is right). Technically that is infringement. Here is a list of the public domain free image sites I use to use. Please take a minute and read the descriptions what you can use the photos for, etc. I know a lot of people post images to mylot and some people just go to google images (I know I did it once, uggh), but if you use these sites, you will find something that is free and public domain. By the way the image I posted comes from a public domain site. http://www.publicdomainpictures.net/ https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page http://www.imageafter.com/ http://www.public-domain-photos.com/ http://www.freeimages.com/ https://www.flickr.com/ http://morguefile.com/

Like I said I use to use these sites a while ago and I just found an excel sheet that had them in it. I figured nowadays there would be more sites.

The notion of public domain varies according to countries. Some pictures advertized like public domain in the NYPL digital collections are not public domain in my country. I prefer a clear license like the Wikimedia commons than a "public domain" mention. There is a way in France that is abused by the media to publish legally an image that is not in the public domain : they add "DR", which means "Rights Reserved" and that they will pay the author if the author asks to be paid : it is a good way for a French newspaper to print a photo without never or quite never paying rights for it...

I use pixabay the most and I find really nice images there. I didn't realize there were so many sites with pictures available to use.
