Emptying The Dishwasher

Years ago I had a female roommate. One night she would cook dinner and the next night I’d cook dinner. If I took dishes out of the cupboard when there were clean dishes in the dishwasher my roommate would have a fit. “Why should I have to put the dishes away that are in the dishwasher when you could have used them?” she would ask. There were two things wrong with this. First, I was the one who usually put the dishes away and second, I felt that was akin to wearing the same shirt day after day. If you wash and wear the same shirt day after day it will wear out faster than any other shirt you own. I feel this is the same with dishes. If you use the same dishes over and over by taking them out of the dishwasher then you will have some dishes in a set that will show wear while others will appear new. I believe in rotating my dishes so they all look the same. I live by myself now so I do as I please. I’ll take the dishes out of the cupboard and use them before I put the dishes in the dishwasher away. I’ll sometimes even put the clean dishes on the bottom of the dishes in the cupboard. This also prevents the same ones from being used over and over. My former roommate has moved away and has gotten married so she can do as she pleases, but for me it’s rotate, rotate, rotate. Do you try to rotate your dishes?

Sometimes I think about things like this. For me it's just as easy to put the dishes away as it is to use them out of the dishwasher.

@RichardMeister I'm keeping mum on what I do with my dishwasher. You might think I truly am fruitcakes.

@sallypup I have heard some pretty "fruitcaky" things in my life so whatever it is it probably would surprise me too much. I know some people wash dishcloths in the dishwasher (not that that is fruitcakes).

I see it like you do! I learned the hard way about our nice utensils . . . I had one out that we always used and a same exact set put away . . . so when we finally needed the second, they were much newer looking than the first set - quite obvious. As far as dishes go, we use them all up that they don't need to be rotated - it just kinda happens on it's own anyway.

@RichardMeister And we fill up the dishwasher before turning it on . . . so all of the set ends up getting washed together - and maybe a half of another. We just somehow use a lot of dishes . . . paper plates would never last here!

@much2say You would probably send a small fortune on paper plates.

If you have a fair size family you can use them enough that they don't need to be rotated.

They don't wear out the same as clothes but over time the ones you use everyday will show more wear than the ones that never get taken out of the cupboard. You're scraping the plates with metal utensil so that would have to wear the plates albeit will take a few years.

I don't really try to but I only run the dishwasher when it is full. Once the dishes are clean, they all get put away so mostly they do get rotated.

I don't like to run my dishwasher unless it is full. That is usually every other day. I only have eight plates so it isn't hard to rotate them.

@RichardMeister For us it is mostly every other day. I seem to have a lot of everything as sometimes we have quite a few people for a meal. I have the room to store things too so am lucky in that respect.

@JudyEv My brother is the only person that has eaten at my place in the last 25 and that was only once or twice.

I have never ever thought of rotating dishes. Even if they get put away they go on top so the same dishes get used over and over unless we go through a lot of dishes for some reason. Lately I have been trying to use the most chipped dishes so they will reach the point where I could just dispose of them!

I can understand you wanting to use the chip plates until you can throw them away.

@RichardMeister I am glad it makes sense to others. Most I know would have thrown the whole set away by now.
