Home from music in the mountains

That was one enjoyable weekend. I made it up there Friday night, jammed with friends until 3 AM, and then did the same all day Saturday and Saturday night. Sunday morning, I helped friends pack up, and headed home. I saw some music friends I hadn't seen in a year, and it seemed like yesterday. Some of the songs I featured were: Wait a Minute, Back to the Barrooms, Paradise, Carmelita, Four Wet Pigs, and Echo Mountain. I was in folk and bluegrass heaven. Now its back to work. I'll try to attach a picture that shows the view from where I camped.

I think they may be Ponderosa Pine, but I'm not sure.

Ooh, I see some favorites there ("Wait a Minite," "Paradise," "Carmalita," the late James King's "Echo Mountain" [if that's the same "Echo Mountain"])! Glad you had a great time, but really, how can you NOT have a great time at a bluegrass festival?!

@TheHorse -- I met him one year at IBMA when they had a "surprise" late-night show featuring Longview (of which he was a member). Fabulous singer, gone way too soon.

Yep, that's the one. RIP James King. I met him at the same festival several years ago.

@FourWalls Yes. I'm going to start practicing Echo Mountain more (and my buddy Howard is going to practice Bed by the Window more). We gotta carry on his legacy.

Seeing the title makes me feel as relaxed as I was over the past couple of days. Now it's back to work, getting new tires, getting my Comcast up and running properly, blah blah blah.

@ilocosboy Start with Box of Rain (from the American Beauty album). Then work your way up to their epic live jams, like St. Stephen.

@TheHorse Although I have seen many people perform, I have not seen any live more than maybe four times. I'm impressed by your 8.

I love folk and bluegrass musics. Your photo shows a beautiful blue sky. Have you noticed that you can spot the moon at the top right corner?

@TheHorse Yes, full moon is tonight and it's also the summer solstice. This is a special moon, it's the Strawberry Moon. The strawberry moon gets its name from Native American tribe, which knew it as the signal to collect ripe fruit. The last time a full moon was on the summer solstice was in 1948. We should celebrate.

Yes. This photo was actually from a couple of years ago (same site). I noticed that the moon was closer to full this year. My guess is that it will be full tonight.

My friends who went there during the week said it had been rainy and cool. There were a couple of nights they couldn't jam outside. But the two days I was there it was in the upper 70s by day and upper 50s by night. It sprinkled a bit Friday night, but not enough to stop us from playing (under a tarp).

Thanks! I did get to play some bass. As I've mentioned before, if I ever get to see your son play, I'll be watching his fingers closely. Playing Western Swing has forced me to learn some jazzier progressions, and we do Moonlight in Vermont, which is a slow but jazzy tune. It'll be awhile, though, before I call myself anything close to a bass player who "can play jazz."

@TheHorse Damian got some sort of scholarship at some stage and part of it was lessons with an orchestral bassist. He found that very useful I think. He was scared stiff of the teacher which was good as it ensured he practiced what he was supposed to.

Wonderful weekend you've had. So sad it had to end so soon. When I was still a student I always looked forward to weekends as I usually went to concerts for free because of my friends who did the front acts all the time.

Funny that I only took in two acts by featured musicians. I was too busy jamming to care about the "main acts."
