Today I am afraid to go outside.
I've locked the doors.
I've closed all the blinds.
We're in hiding until this day ends because today is, of all things, National Kick a Ginger Day.
As a redhead, I am highly offended when I'm labeled a Ginger... Though I didn't know that I should be offended until 5 years ago, when I met a fellow redhead who was actually named Ginger. I got the low-down (thanks a lot, South Park!) from this random stranger and since then, my life has never been the same!
I thought I'd take this opportunity, while I'm hiding behind my computer screen, to fix some misconceptions some of y'all might have about redheads:
(1) You look like a carrot top!
Um, no. First of all, I look human. Secondly, we all know carrot tops aren't red or orange...they're green.
(2) Redheads have bad tempers.
False! Our tempers are grand and glorious! Our tempers often create fireworks. And fireworks are pretty!
(3) Redheaded step-children are beaten.
Another false statement. I, as a step-child, was not beaten any more than my siblings.
(4) Redheads can't go out into the sun.
False, false, false! Don't y'all know anything? When we go out in the sun we sparkle like vampires! Actually, it's more like a glow. A reddish glow. That lasts for days...
(5) Redheads have no souls.
This is absolutely false and we have proof! Every single freckle on our faces represent a stolen soul!
All joking aside, I don't get how there can be a day promoting violence towards redheads...even if it is in jest. We don't have a National Slap a Blonde Day, or Punch a Brunette, or Rub a Bald Guy's Head. So why pick on redheads?
Redheads make up about 1% of the population. Since we're so rare we should be cherished, not feared. If you fear us, it should be of the reverent sort.
But you better have a tight hold of your soul before you try kicking me. 'Cause you might just lose it to my collection!
In conclusion, please remember:
Only a Ginger can call another Ginger, "Ginger"!

I could not believe reading that such a day existed. It seems it is not unique to the USA but has also happened here when gangs of kids attacked ginger kids. How horrible.

They shouldn't have a day like this! How horrible! I know what you're going through. If I hear one more joke about my intelligence because I'm a blonde, I'm going to scream! lol

@Genipher lol I try to take it all in good fun. Except when someone is intentionally trying to be mean and goes too far...

As do I, with the "Ginger" stuff.
I like to pretend to rage and threaten to gather all the redheads in the world for a protest march...my skin's not really that thin though.

Growing up we had an Irish Catholic family in the neighborhood with eight children, four of whom were redheads with beautiful bright read hair. I always loved the color and never thought of it as rare or strange then or now. I've colored my hair red on occasion over the years but it has only recently come to my attention that as you said, people are focusing negatively on redheads. Must be something that happened on TV.

@Genipher OH that show. I don't watch but I've seen a couple of horrendous episodes.

I think I saw an episode once, way back when I was a teen. I know the basic gist of the show and some of the characters but that's about it.
It is pretty horrendous!

I have never heard of a "National Kick a Ginger Day"! I don't think that's nice at all.
I saw the title and thought "Here is someone who NEEDS Tim Minchin's "Prejudice"! I love the way that he suggests that he's talking about a very non-PC anagram of 'ginger'. I think he's fantastic. I also love his "Confession" and many other classics. A very clever and witty fellow!
My father was a ginger (one of the very bright ones, when he was little, I understand, with a face full of freckles) and he was always nicknamed "Carrots" at school but I only remember him with grey hair and, in early colour photos, as auburn.
I have always thought red hair most attractive, especially on the ladies. I really believe that anyone who has it should be well proud!

My grandma tells stories of how she was mocked for being a redhead.
Nowadays, it seems many women want to be a redhead.
Oh how the times have changed!
I grew up with more vulgar classmates. They had the all-consuming need to know if the "carpet matched the drapes" and other inappropriate questions.
I didn't catch the anagram of "ginger" the first time I listened to Prejudice. My husband said something and then I finally caught on.
I'm a bit slow at times...probably from those random, blonde hairs on my head.

My childhood best friend had red hair. Is loving debates a red head trait? She loves debating about anything! Lol.

I didn't enjoy debates until I got married. My husband used to "argue" with people all the time (he's NOT a redhead) when we met.
Now our roles seem to have reversed. He says there's no point in debating with people, but I just can't help myself!
And my sisters hate confrontation. So I would have to say, no. Debating and Redheads don't go hand-in-hand.

I have never heard of that day before. I want to thank you for clearing things up about what people have said about redheads for me.
