My Top 25 Johnny Cash Songs: Port of Lonely Hearts (#8)

I'm counting more than the Count on Sesame Street! Here I continue my countdown of my 25 favorites by the legendary Johnny Cash. #8: Port of Lonely Hearts Here we have Cash doing something he rarely did (in fact, I can't think of another example of it right off the top of my head): singing back-up with himself. That's easy today, but back then "overdubbing" wasn't a common event. But oh, the great results. This wonderful song (it was, I think, the fourth song on side one of Now Here's Johnny Cash, a side that began rather poorly with a cover of "Sugartime"...not that we had the album or anything ) is about a man whose love has left. The analogy is a man going to the port daily to see if his love is returning ("I'll be waiting in the port of lonely hearts watching for your top sail on the sea, praying that my ship of love will come"). I don't know if I could have tolerated Cash singing with himself on every song, but here it works perfectly.
