Respect earned or given??

I grew up in a very religious family... and my momma always taught me that you should respect everyone specially your elders because its the right thing to do. I remember going to the church and we would always always take our time to gather the beggars and street children to give them food, i was taught to give respect to every living even none living thing.... treating them witj respect is treating them with care. But as i grew up i strayed soooo far from my religious beliefs and started to doubt everything and i meet foreign people like from the states...which made me more confuse; Thugs and even girls yelling about respect should be earned, its always that constant battle with strangers... like its a weakness if you treat other people with kindness... i never understood this but i want too. What do you think? I still think respect should be given until proven otherwise, is it really that bad tho?

If you want people to respect you , you need to learn how to respect others especially the elders. Respect is a good moral and virtues that we must have

@Kinnian03 Don't try to explain if people don't except, argument make things worst and may hurts someone. Is their right to believe or not, they have the choice. Stop further explanation jump to other topic. May be latter if you need so.

Yes. There is nothing wrong in it. Does it demand anything aditional from your pocket?

@Kinnian03 No. Definitely not. After all what we are doing? Simply wishing them or showing prompt attention to their sayings taking them as orders. Even if you do not want to obey them you can reject them politely. There is no harm in it. Parents should teach the kids how to respect them and how to reject the elders respectfully.

@Kinnian03 but those who does injustice we can't respect them for sure.

I just think everybody deserves it until proven otherwise... thats why i think it should be given and not earned... nobody should be put through hell to gain someones approval.. everyone should be treated with dignity.

I'm not sure how you were taught, but I give everyone respect through courtesy. That is one level of respect. They can only earn my greater respects if they prove that they are worthy of it. For example, I respect a person by greeting them nicely and not being rude. If the person does bad things to me or I don't think they are not worth my time, then they lose my respect. However, I give trust and more care if they don't do bad things or are even helping me. Even a bystander can get my greater respect if they treat me with respect too.

@Kinnian03 Then perhaps the problem is with them and not with you. Some people just like making fun of others and doing rude things because they have yet to understand how to see things in the eyes of others. It's alright as long as you gave them your respect at least once. If they don't return the respect you gave, then they are not worthy of your respect.

@Tierkreisze but... thats just so sad. I mean the only time being disrespectful should ever be allowed is when your in bed and you wanna make things nasty hahahaha *sighs* i guess you cant really please everybody or change their mind and show them how things are so much better... "drama" is such a huge hit this days that the last thing people wanna do is be good to others smh they think its cool or funny to treat others like complete shite just because those people are really of no use to them.

My mom and dad were very strict lol and yes courtesy is another form of respect but even that most people from the states i know they cant even give it... basically my momma categorized "being good" as respect lol i was taught to treat others as how i would wanna be treated until they decide to be completly rude still then all bets are off hahaha I dont know im still struggling with this cause ofcourse some people are just right off the bat a$$holes and i dont know why they can be so rude if youve never done anything to them.

Well, I respect those who respect me. That's simple.

It is quite simple isnt it... thats why its so confusing when you see people just go out of their way to disrespect you or treat you badly or call you names just becase youre nothing to them. You would think that being nice to someone would come as a natural or a default thing for strangers.. but ive noticed that its not like that to most of the people in this generation now.

@Kinnian03 I know. But then again, if they want to be respected, they must show respect.

Everyone deserves it regardless of who we are. We don't have to know first if they're going to respect us back. It's like love. We don't wait for people to tell us that they love us before we show it to them.

Respect is earned; it is through your actions; how you treat other people, how you respect yourself and other people too.

Respect is given to only few people. It can be earned but cannot be buy. You are brought up to a religious family and people are respecting you. I respect you because of what you said... giving foods to the beggars in the street.
22 Jun 16
It is such a complicated thing specially if a friend or a family member disrespects you... your morals easily changes lol i guess it just bothered me how most people choose to be rude than be polite... specially on social medias.. you get judged at for what you look like lol its a cruel world indeed

It has been my goal to spread to people how being a nice human is gonna make their life better could open oppurtunities too lol it is anything but simple... some people choose to make other peoples life lile hell and they wonder why theyre getting talked back at... feels like a lost cause sometimes, but getting through to someone and having them apply it and seeing the difference is so much of a reward... its just so right in the feels lol
