Albert is a town in Picardie in northern France and located in the Somme department. We visited some sites from World War I. Albert was founded as a Roman outpost in about 54 BC.
One of its more well-known attractions is the 'Leaning Virgin' which once sat atop the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Brebières. Originally known as the Golden Virgin, the statue, designed by sculptor Albert Roze, was hit by a shell in 1915 and slumped to a near-horizontal position. Depending on which side you were fighting, the eventual fall of the statue would signify victory or defeat in the war. It remain slumped until 1918 when further shelling toppled the tower.
The town was completely reconstructed after the war. The Basilica was rebuilt and a replica of the Virgin was constructed. The Abri (Shelter) Museum houses memorabilia from the war. The museum is located in a series of tunnels which once served as protective bunkers for the residents during aerial bombardment during World War II. There are reconstructions of various scenes together with many photographs and maps. I have included photos of several notices which are interesting to read if you want to halt the slideshow at those points.
The tunnels pass under the Basilica square and when we emerged after our visit, we were disoriented and for a while had no idea where we had left the motor-home.

@crazyhorseladycx I've read about them attaching skin from the shoulder across to the face and later doing operations to cover scars or recreate noses. There were also dances organised for the men at their facility and a group of girls would be brought in as partners. Despite being prepared as much as possible for the sight, some of the girls would leave between dances to be sick in the toilets. Sorry for writing about it but .....

Lovely spot. I did not visit this city when in France. There are just too many lovely places to see there.

@JudyEv Another issue is that we develop favorite spots and want to go there over and over. I could live in Salzburg or Heidelberg.

@ElizabethWallace I could go to all the same places but leave out the centres of cities. We didn't go to Heidelberg but Salzburg and Innsbruck were both lovely.

@JudyEv Yes, it's easy to forget the history of places we travel so it's important to keep a journal ..and those notice boards can trigger our memory ..

What a fascinating place this was. I have driven through Picady but we didn't visit anything. I now wish I had. I do have one ancestor from Picardy though.

It is important to remember and learn about the men and women who fought so hard for their countries.

Appreciated the slide show. Just tunnels usually don't mess with my internal compass. Riding in an elevator does.

We're all different aren't we? We came out of the picture theatre two days ago and I was 'lost'.

lovely, and neat memories associated with your visit, although I myself hate getting turned around on vacas and trips

So nice to see the war artifacts; but as I was looking at it, I felt a little goosebumps! Don't know why.

Those are some cool photos. I wish I'd have had more time to see this sort of stuff when I was over there.
