The rainy season

China
June 23, 2016 4:07am CST
Please don’t get it wrong,it is not the rains or monsoon that falls in tropical countries, but the one in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River between May and June and lasts about one month. We also call it plum rain because it comes exactly when the plums are ripe ,as I have mentioned it in previous post. We haven’t had two consecutive fine days since 13,June the plum rain set in. Normally the plum rain features intermittent drizzles, however this year since El Nino influence, It has been pouring with rain and sometimes the rain teemed down day and night. Now the Yangtze River is in spate and where I live ,there is just about one metre to go for floodwater to rise to the street level. Some parts of our province begin to fight a flood. Much to our relief, there is a great flood-prevention project in our city.

I remember you mentioned the plum rain before. I am envious of all that rain you have had there as we no longer have rainy seasons to count on (we are bone dry here). But on the flip slide, I know floods are not good either . . . good you have a flood-prevention system out there. Have you actually ever had to experience a flood where you actually live?

@changjiangzhibin89 Oh, thank goodness for that dam - some smart engineering there! My dad remembers going through a flood in Japan . . . he remembers seeing a neighbors house float away - and go straight into the ocean! How close are you to the river?

@much2say It is just a 10 minute walk to the river and every morning I go for a walk along the river.

I have experienced flood before flood-prevention system was built, then our old house on the low-lying land was flooded. Now there is never such a thing as that. The photo below is our flood-prevention dam. photo taken by myself.

It seems that yesterday the flights were out of service in Shanghai because of the heavy rain. I don't know that it could be so serious in your side. We had the heavy rain a few weeks before but at least there was not flood. The weather was clear after the heavy rain. The rain comes fast and also leaves fast. It is sunny and hot here everyday now.

@changjiangzhibin89 I didn't know that it could be so serious. As I often think that the typhoon or something like that must happen more frequently and seriously in the south rather than in your side.

@youless Where I live is a small city on the Yangtze River .Floods are of concern to us every year, but there is hardly typhoon or tornado here.

It is great the weather stays fine there.I have had enough of the rainy days. The flights being out of service must have been due to the tornado that hit the northen JiangSu province yesterday

Wow, glad your city has flood prevention. where I live, there are flash floods, but my house is higher up, so we don't have flooding even though I live on a lake. Plus, the dam keeps the place from flooding and even if it did break (which would be unusual since they have it inspected for weak spots) the flood waters would move away from my house, not towards it.

Now,like you ,we can come through the flood waters safe and sound .The low-lying parts of Our city flooded a couple of times before building up the flood prevention project.Additionally now there is a big reservoir on the upper reaches of our city and water can be stored there once has higher rainfall.

@changjiangzhibin89 That's good. I don't know if you heard about another state here where the flooding is so bad, last I heard there have been 26 deaths. I feel so bad for the people in the area and I know one member here lives in this state and posted that she is safe.

We had the same problem this year, torrential rain from the end of May that lasted for 3 weeks. Now the rain has stopped and the summer temperature is here.

Sounds like the UK we are having lots of rain which is unusual for this time of year. I went up the Yangtze river before they flooded it. I thought that was going to be the answer to all your problems with floods etc. Clearly not but at least if it stops the many deaths that used to happen then it is a good thing! So many were forced out of their homes. How sad eh! Be safe!

After reading this post, I understand why you wrote a comment saying that you couldn't take a good picture of your potted flowers because of the rain. I didn't realize that it was so much rain.
