Break Free

It is finalized and Great Britain has voted to break away from the EU. It is really quite a shock for me since I just cannot imagine what EU would be like without one of the strongest countries inside. It seems like we will have to wait and see what is going to happen to the whole European community and its' economy. Great Britain will be undergoing some major consequences politically and economically. Eyes rolling and heads are definitely going to roll as well. Any idea what's going to happen next? What a weekend, this is! Ref:
Voting came to an end at 10pm following a day in which storms and torrential rain disrupted much of the south - but did not appear to deter people from coming out to register their view at the ballot box.

Europe is the greatest idea since USA. The only ones who have not agreed to this are English people : they joined belatedly, have put a foot inside Europe, and have kept the other foot outside : UK was not in the Schengen area, UK kept its money, etc. The result is that the benefits of living in Europe were not seen by basic people. It was time for UK to chose where they wanted to put their two feet. I think it offers a chance for a new start in Europe. For UK, it might be the beginning of the end, if people in Scotland and Northern Ireland leave it to stay in Europe...

Along with many economist, this move by the Brits might be the beginning of the end which is not going benefit any one at all. This upcoming uncertainty does spell trouble and trouble is definitely the last thing any one would want during this challenging period of time.

@destry It is your right. As I said, it was time to choose where you, UK citizens, wanted to put your feet, and I am happy that you did it clearly.

It's a good result for the average Brit, a lot of people have been cynical of Europe for many years. I think that now one country has left, other countries will also hold referendums to leave.

I cannot imagine the EU breaking up but if it does then some countries will definitely be in turmoil like Greece.

@artemeis why should British citizens bail out the inept greek government? We are penalised for having a better run country. I'm glad that will be stopping.

@Mike197602 Well said, I think the average Joe Bloggs in the UK sees all the bail outs for the dysfunctional Eurozone and feels mightily disgruntled that we get penalized for having a better run / more prosperous country!

I don't know much about why they have to hold a referendum on seperating from the EU.However,I think it is certainly an earth-shattering news and It remains to be seen if it brings weal or woe.

I never thought that the differences would actually end up like this and this is really causing much grave concerns from all quarters. Splitting now is really not a good idea, I just hope that it would not bring about a backlash globally.

@Mike197602 I feel that if he had anticipated this outcome he would still go ahead with the referendum to allow the people to speak. For this I have to give him full credits here.

The reason we had a referendum was because before the last general election a party called UKIP was looking a serious threat to the Conservatives. A lot of traditional Conservative voters are eurosceptics so to keep their vote Cameron made an election promise for a referendum which he delivered. I think if he knew what the result would be he wouldn't have made that promise...but then he may not have won the election.

I may be Canadian but was born in London and am gravely saddened by this vote. It will cost Britain dearly, potentially including the breakup of the country and the collapse of the pound.

With the split I am sure the rest of the world will feel the after effects and how great it will turn out is left to be seen.

@artemeis "Great" is not in the vocabulary for the aftermath of Britain after leaving the EU.

The £ has remained a lot longer than the Frank or the Mark! I doubt very much that it will collapse!

Change for the worse is what I am anticipating and quite sure that the countries suffering will not let off the Brits easily.

@artemeis It seems difficult to anticipate what some of the outcomes will be.

Think what will happen if you have businesses with the European countries while at the same time the UK. Think dollars and cents.

I read something about it via the net. Although I felt shock to it, but I think there are still some reasonable reasons for Great Britain to leave EU. At least there are still some good sides for them to do so. After all, their people chose it. At least they could vote to stay or leave.

EU is suppose to enhance economic and trade co-operation but the Brits just doesn't see things eye to eye here.

I don't know how the effect will be if they separated themselves from the EU. I think more should have been discussed before a vote was put to place, unless the people had long decided for it.

This is an example where letting the people speak has failed and it is surprising that Cameron did not set a benchmark to be regarded as a firm majority but again, I suppose that is what democracy is all about.

It will be left to be seen when the market opens on Monday day time but the British pound is already down 10% and most of the countries are putting the currency on a hold till Monday.
