Adopted by Houdini

Not our cat

About three months ago the teen was adopted by a cat that followed him home one night. The teen insists said cat followed him one km uphill and having staked her territory the adoption was sealed with the contents of a tin of sardines. Said cat was unfortunately named Houdini and then renamed Houdi by me as she is female. Houdi is super intelligent and comes bounding up the olive grove when called and has mastered opening the shutters to come inside. She is now getting fat as our Athenian neighbour insists on feeding her an extra meal at midday as a reward for keeping the snakes away. I haven't seen the two tortoises lately so perhaps Houdi managed an extra snack.

Cats seem to have a flair for adopting owners, which has happened to me a few times. It is sad when I end up with a feline friend while on holiday because it will no doubt feel abandoned once I fly home.

I'm sure they just hope the next people in the room are as nice to them.

@thea09 That could only continue for a short while as residents change.

@Asylum Yes, they get spoiled for the season and then go back to hunting for prey.

Indeed she always brings a smile - unless she is sitting on my head at 4.am. A nasty habit which will have her sleeping outside for the summer.

@Inlemay No she starts chewing it and then if that doesn't get a reaction she hits me on the neck until I get up.

@thea09 such a loving habit. Does she tease your hair a little with her purring?

She's the first pet we've had unless you count the tortoises and Harold the spider.

@thea09 I've never had either of those. I had cats and dogs growing up and I really want to get another dog. My life is just too disorganised to bring one into my home right now, but I'm hoping that will change soon.

Good to see you on here again. A cat that keeps snakes away is worth fostering.

Hi Judy, yes it's the first year I haven't spotted a snake in the garden so she must be doing a good job.

Houdi would have to take Mildred under her wing if you ever let her outdoors, even the neighbouring guard dog is now frightened of my cat.

Cats are very good at adopting the right person! Our cat Smooch made his presence known at the SPCA by constantly rubbing against our legs when we weren't giving him a second glance.

How is the 'teen' doing other than bring home stray cats?

The teen is busy working at his summer job again, attracting the tourists with his now green hair. I practically only see him when I wake him in the mornings or if he invites me down for a coffee with him.

Happy to see you too John - and in a new hat. The cat also follows the new toys and I keep threatening the teen I will venture into cat clothes next.

sounds 'kin to the hubs 'n his pups he's brought home o'er the years. swears they were jest runnin' down the lonely highway...always becomin' lovin' members'f the family :) yepperz, those cats're great fer more'n jest mice 'n rats, which's why i like many to be 'round here. they keep the bad snakes from venturin' too close to the house'n barns. i truly hope that the tortoises jest went where they'd not be pestered 'n t'weren't a tasty treat fer ms. houdi.
