Any Idea to Fight Mosquitoes?

Here we are, the temperature is finally up and the mosquitoes are active, day and night. Inside the house, I plug the electric repellents and we have no problems. When I work in the garden is another matter. I apply mosquito milk repellent on my skin, but it's impossible to cover all the skin, and they always find a way to bite me. In our pharmacy, I have seen mosquito repellent bracelets. They are treated with natural plants that "should" keep the mosquitoes away. Have you tried those bracelets? Are they really useful, or am I going to waste my money?

There is no point in asking me Anna because those hideous pests win every time. Some times I have expected them to exsanguinate me entirely. I have found that if I stand on one it tends to lose its appetite.

@Asylum It's hard to get them all and some are smart enough not to fly too low.

I see that you have my same problem, I am their favorite food and they never miss me. I have noticed that standing on them helps.

Do you have Avon products in Switzerland? I read somewhere the other day (I think it was on here) that Avon's Skin-So-Soft is an excellent mosquito repellent although it isn't marketed as such. I haven't tried it but that's what I read. It would be good if the bracelets worked.

The mosquito milk is very good, but it is impossible to be sure that you have covered all your skin. Usually I try to avoid the area around the eyes and the lips and they come to bite even there. I think that I am going to try the bracelet.

Someone told me that you have to use the Skin so soft bath oil and rub it on your arms and legs like you would a bug repellent. I have tried the lotion and it does not work. I was going to get the oil from Amazon but it is not eligible for Prime free shipping which sucks. I will try to find an Avon rep near me and get some that way.

I have the same problem. My whole house have screen but why the hell there are still mosquitoes biting me here inside. i have just heard of that mosquito bracelet. I do have citronella plant so i do cut some leaves from the plant, cut them into small pieces and i put them beside my working area and it helps keep away the mosquitoes

@LadyDuck Which variety of citronella do you have, is it the one that looks exactly like lemon grass? I used to think it was not effective because I just planted it in my garden and i noticed its presence in my garden does not really help repel mosquitoes until my sister taught me to get the leaves and cut them into pieces so it will release its fragrance that the mosquitoes hate. Citronella candles are useless.

I have a citronella plant outside, I also bought citronella candles, but it does not seem to help a lot. Those pests are terrible.

The best way to fight them is to see to it that there are no stagnant water lying around like jars or vases or open canals that do not flow. Guppy fish is a natural predator but i am not sure if they thrive well in you climate

@LadyDuck yes we should support and propagate their natural enemies, that's why i teach my kids not to kill lizards and spiders and toads

@louievill You are so right. It is important to keep the useful animals. We have a pond and there are frogs, they eat plenty of unwanted insects.

There is no stagnant water, we are fined if the authorities discover that we keep jar or vases with stagnant water in our properties. I have installed a bat house, because they are the animals that eat more mosquitoes.

@LadyDuck I have not heard of that bracelet.I think the most effective ones when you are in the garden is the repellent cream(milk) you rub on your body,The mosquitoes are experts in biting that spot where it is not covered -behind the ears, near the tips of fingers, near the eyes and lips.

They sell machine for outside - not cheap - but they not only get them but other pests (wasps etc) as well. They don't bother me seems they prefer my husband's skin to mine thank God!

We use the electric machine for outside when we dine on the patio. When I move in the garden it does not help, because it only protects a very restricted area and the garden is quite big. I am going to try the bracelets, they are not too expensive.

@AbbyGreenhill I have discovered that there is not a single bracelet that works. Now that you mention the QVC machines I know what you mean. I have seen them for sale in Italy, this is something I want to buy. I have read some reviews, they are not perfect and you have to turn them on hours before to go outside, well this means that if I need to go out and it was not planned, I still have to spray OFF on my arms and legs.

@LadyDuck The machine QVC sells are two sizes, one is 1/4 acres and the bigger one is 1 acre. Bracelets would be much less expensive!

oh dear :( been battlin' those here's well, though not to the extreme i'm certain ya got 'em there, hon. i put vanilla extract into unscented lotion ('r mix with sunscreen...) 'n slather't'n. fer some reason they aint fond'f the scent? e'en put a drop 'r 2 'n my hands 'n lightly rub o'er my hair 'n clothin'. lemongrass's said to ward 'em off's well - if'n such'll grow'n yer neck'f the woods. if'n i'm findin' myself'n a hurry, i'll rub my hands cross those here 'n give myself a go-o'er. i've not tried those bracelets myself, but've tried 'em fer my equine friends'n the past. they worked'n areas closest to the "bands", but they were still gettin' bit. not to say such's not improved immensely - this 'twas 'bout 7-8 years back.

@just4him The bracelets do not work, the local health department has suggested me to use a product containing DEET that it's the only sure one to keep away this kind of mosquitoes. I have bought several bottles of OFF.

Mosquitoes are liking my skin, but they hate a few smells, and there are two efficient and relatively cheap hydrolats that you can buy in organic shops : a hydrolat of geranium or a hydrolat of juniper. The first is supposed to be the more efficient, but I really do not like the smell, and I buy the juniper one : I have had true success with it during an excavation in summer near a river invaded by mosquitoes.

@LadyDuck They possibly hide near your brook. Check if you can support the smell of the geranium hydrolat first, it is the more efficient. I find it sickening, but it is more sickening for mosquitoes, and they will flee away of you.

@topffer I will try, but I also hate the smell of the geranium flowers, I imagine it's similar. The brook is running water, there are no mosquitoes there, nor near my pond, because there are plenty of frogs.

I am surely going to try because if there is something sure is the fact that they like my skin. I suppose they hide in the hedge of the neighbor, I am going to pour weed killers in that hedge.

@LadyDuck Some have the skill and are fat when they fly away. Not all are so skilled. I use open hand and closed fist. Slap spot hurts worse more than the bite. Yes so small specially around a dark background which they like.

@DeborahDiane I have found the official Swiss web site for the prevention of diseases and I have also checked the French site. They both place the bracelets among the items NOT to use to prevent the mosquitoes bites. I have printed the list of the products to use. Now I know that I have to use lotions on my skin and on my clothes, there is nothing else that can help.
