Inexpensive doesn't amount to savings

I notice that people just load up on stuff because they are cheaper or inexpensive. I wonder if they really use all that they buy.. How much of the stuff actually ends in the trash can especially stuff that has low shelf life.
Inexpensive could also ( not always) mean poor quality or trashy stuff and may not be worth the price we pay.
It could mean that its nearing or past the expiry date.
For me it seems like we buy more than we should and we spend more that we ought to.
Personally speaking I only buy what I need never more never less.. even if it is on sale.
How about you?

I only buy what I need and buy as expensive as I want. In that way I save money usually because I donĀ“t throw away much.

@marguicha I think the same way too.. I feel very guilty to throw away expensive stuff and I find way to use all up.

We very rarely buy multiples of goods..even if they are cheap or on offer...we do not have a great deal of storage ..but I can see the temptation...but also agree ..it may not always be a money saver....

@sueznewz2 Storage is an issue for most of us.. People could very well do without some of those things they buy in bulk. I have a friend who buys meat in bulk and then throws parties because she has to finish it.. in the process she spends a lot more than she spent for the meat.

I buy more than I need if it is storable and offer...things like tinned food or toilet roll, things like that.
I don't buy more than I need if it's fresh and can't be frozen.

@Mike197602 Durable stuff is fine.. Stuff like toilet rolls and canned food can be bought in bulk .. but perishables don't make sense at all. Even when we freeze them we get bored of them after a while and could endup trowing them away.

@Marty1 I used to but I don't have a big freezer anymore just a small one attached to the fridge.

Usually, if I buy more than necessary, it often times becomes a waste. I try to only buy what I need. Otherwise, it just becomes clutter.

@crazyhorseladycx Have you seen those who shop because they have to shop? Money in the bank is worth twice by the way of interest.

@crazyhorseladycx Yeah I guess boredom and low self esteem maybe at the root of the problem..

@sofssu yes ma'am, my momma 'n daughter seem to suffer from such'n affliction. i say such's usually do to low self-esteem :( buyin' schtuff that aint needed somehow fulfills some sorta "gap" 't the moment anyhow - usually followed by regret.

Purchasing 'ON SALE' items is not a saving. Sometimes, they prove to be expensive. More spending does not mean more expensive.

@shivamani10 Spending is spending.. but spending wisely could help you save.

If canned goods we know we will use are on sale, be buy a little extra but that's about it. We don't have the storage space we used to so we don't stockpile as much. With good planning, stockpiling isn't always a bad idea. Stockpiling perishables is another story.

I agree. We have a friend who buys in bulk because he gets it at a cheaper price, then his wife has to give some away because they would get spoiled.Nice for others but what saving?

@responsiveme So true.. it doesn't make sense when people buy inexpensive stuff believing that they are saving. Lucky neighbors and friends.. freebies are always welcome good quality or not.

@Marty1 its not just food but like about two dozen brooms...he was driving down and saw them on the highway and they were cheaper than at the store so....need we say quite a few of us didn't have to buy brooms for a couple of months.
That type of thing.

since i don't have a lot of spare cash, i don't buy it if i don't need it, if it takes a long time to consume or if i need to find a use for it.

@hereandthere Makes sense.. we usually get bored if things take a long time to be consumed. Especially with food stuff.

If there is a sale on something I will buy a lot of it, my grocery store had a deal for 39 cent 3 pound bags of onions I bought 12 pounds of onions, now I knew we couldn't eat 12 pounds of onions before they spoiled but I knew I could chop them and freeze them for soups, sauteing and recipes. I think it depends on how you are able to store them and if you have the resources to make them last.
