She Just Let Her Kid Cry

The other Sunday , halfway down the mass , the kid at our back , keeps crying as if he wants to go out . The priest was celebrating the mass , but the kid keeps crying . However , I looked back and saw the mother trying to console the kid . But still the kid keeps crying yet the woman didn’t bring him outside . The priest’s face is already annoyed . Some priests who are really strict, won’t allow this and would call the attention of the mother through the microphone with everyone hearing it . How I wish the priest told the woman to just bring the kid outside so as not to disturb the mass . And when the people keeps looking back at her , she went out together with the kid . Good , i told myself in my mind , I know, some religion while the mass is ongoing the kids are in their Sunday school so they can’t disturb the solemnity of the mass . Would you just let your kid just keep crying and not bring him outside , while the mass is ongoing , if you were in the stead of the woman ?

is this your own photo? Our priest would say that the crying of the child should not disturb you is you are focused on what your real purpose being there is. I once had my own daughter cry during a service and stood up to walk out to the cry-room and from the pulpit the priest stopped the service and told me to be calm and sit again, that the child is part of the service.

Yes, it is mine . That is a photo of the church i always go to Sunday mass . Really , there is a cry room ? How old was your child then ? And did she stop crying when told by the priest to just let her be in the church ? Well, as parents we would indeed do that - lead them out and just hear the mass while she doesn't stop crying . But some priests here who are strict would stop to tell the parent to let her child stop crying specially when it's already the homily . I think priests have different ways of viewing crying children inside the church specially when the homily is being read and given .

@SIMPLYD my daughter was six months old - a baby, but she could sit already. That is a beautiful photo that is why I asked.

In our Chinese parish, there's a Children's Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) which my wife oversees. When it's time for the first reading, the children line up on the aisle with one child bearing the gospel book for children and the offciating blesses them before they go to the multi-purpose hall at the back of the church where they are divided into two groups. One is for 8 and below and the other is for those above 8. There are many students and young professional who volunteer as facilitator. The gospel is read and after that they have a lively interaction. My wife keeps watch at the sacristy to signal the facilators that the homily is finished and the children line up again and come out by the side door of the alter and join the offertory procession. The number of children attending this have rapidly grown as it is the only Children's Liturgy in the city and maybe in the diocese.

@sunrisefan I think churches in the provinces should also adopt that now . Some children can really be unruly , sometimes even walking up to the altar .

@SIMPLYD I think they also have that at The Feast at PICC which we attended once when we visited when our older daughter was still working in Makati. My wife inherited the task from her sister who passed away some years ago due to CA.

i remember an officemate who said he had to go home because his daughter was becoming unruly and impatient, then went back to attend the next mass.

That should be the case . Anyway , there is a speaker outside where the mass being celebrated is heard by everyone outside . At least, there she can cry as much as she can without disturbing everybody inside the church .

So, you will leave the wailing child alone inside the church? Not bring him out with you?

Its so annoying when you are focused on praying and on worship. Parents need to have more sense than that.. here we have a separate seating space for moms and little children.

Indeed , i feel like that too . I cannot focus on the mass . And you are right , as parents we should know what better thing to do about that . I have attended Born Again christian churches . They have that .

@SIMPLYD As a young mother I always brought my sons' toys or some little thing to keep them quiet. I have always been able to manage them .. or if they were uncomfortable due to something I always walked out. Its better that way than to distract so many people.

I would be so annoyed listening to the mass with a child crying .. And if I was the mother, I would take the child out and go home .. It is inconsiderate.. If I was sitting close to them, I would tell the mother politely to take her child outside . LOL , just reading your post I am feeling annoyed at the mother already .. .. hahah!

I think a lot depends on what part of the Mass it is. during the consecration she needs to take the baby out and during the sermon, I would have taken the baby out but I know once I had my little grandson with me and he ran out of the pew and up behind the altar rail, I ran after him trying to get him to come back and the priest said to me leave him alone he is not bothering anyone. lol My little grandson stood beneath the pulpit and started to dance, it was really cute but I was mortified!! lol After all Jesus loved children!!

@SIMPLYD here in the cathedral where i hear mass, the children are staying just near the door. older kids can stay inside and kneel on the pews.

@ridingbet Yes, i see that some are like that too in our church . So , i wondered why this lady with the crying child in front , that turned into wailing isn't bringing her at the back portion if she doesn't like outside .

If a kid cries, this may mean that he wants to go out and is uneasy with the surroundings, so better bring him out.

Precisely . But it seems the woman wants to just attend the mass so she just let the kid wail actually , not just cry .

@Yar_Joey That's why sometimes we have to discern if our child can already behave well at the church . .

@SIMPLYD Yes but how can the mother concentrate on attending the mass when her kid is 'howling'? That is why the kid was an instant center of attraction.

But the parent should also make a way to stop the child from crying because everyone is distracted by the crying and cannot focus on the mass . Specially when it's already the homily , the parent should just go out where the crying cannot be heard and distract the parishioners.

Based on my experience , parents would get out with the child when their children cries . I wonder why the woman just let her cry which turned to wailing already .

I do not remember my kids crying during a mass when they were still little. And if that happened, I would be sensitive enough to bring them out.

I remembered myself crying the whole time that the mass is ongoing . That's because mother didn't let me wash my face because we will be late for the 4:00 a.m. mass . But i guess it was just a weak cry and we were at the back most part of the church .

Yes, i understand the mom . But then , when the child was already wailing she should have just went out of the church and be there outside together with other parents seeing their children , while hearing the mass on the speaker outside .
