You know that old saying...

A different discussion brought to my mind all the famous sayings there are in the world. I think about sayings in other countries that might sound so odd to me, yet make perfect sense, in say, Asia. And, vice versa. I like "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all", and "It ain't over 'til it's over". Of course, the latter saying is by Yogi Berra, who was a great baseball player and a great person to get a quote from. Anyone remember "Liar liar pants on fire, nose as long as a telephone wire"? Someone once told me they had never heard the last part, with the telephone wire. What do you have?

I had never heard the one with the telephone wire. People who are not familiar with Pinocchio may not get it. I guess because I get to see so many sunrises and sunsets I often think of "Red sky at morning, sailors take warning. Red sky at night, sailors' delight." and I have heard it quoted as farmers take warning or delight.

And I've heard 'red sky in the morning, all day storming, red sky at night, shepherds' delight'.

I know the 'liar liar bit' but haven't heard of the telephone wire bit either. 'Ditto, brother Smut' is one you don't hear very often nowadays.

@AmbiePam The meaning is similar to 'the pot calling the kettle black'.

My mother often told me not to let my face freeze like that. Never knew what she meant. Guess I made some goofy faces.

@AmbiePam the telephone wire just came to me. But we would sing Liar Liar pants on fire, hanging from a telephone wire. Don't know what that would mean either! LOL

I have heard the first two, but I never heard the "liar liar..." phrase. We have this saying in Italy "Aiutati, che il ciel ti aiuta." (Help yourself and heaven will help you.)

I hadn't heard that last line either! I like "you can't fix stupid" and my personal favorite to my kids "because I said so."

I remember all of those. Telephones don't have wires today, so people can't associate it.

I bet other cultures really wonder about us when we say it ain't over till the fat lady sings! I have heard those and I do love a good saying. I often use the "jump off a bridge" one with my kids.
