Air Conditioning...

I have two window air conditioners in my apartment, one for each 'end' of my living space. They're rated at 5200btu each; small ones. Over the years, it has come to my attention that most people believe that air conditioners were made to cool the air in the home. The principle of a.c. is not to 'cool' the air, but, rather, to 'remove' heat and humidity from the living environment. It's a fact of physics that, in winter, you can add heat in a space to warm it up against the cold; but, in summer, it is theoretically impossible to add 'cold'' to the ambient temperature. It is called 'Air Conditioning'. That is, comfortable to live in. Now, why would you want to be in a home that is so cold that you have to wear a sweater to survive? I've been in houses like that. If it were winter and it were that cold, you would turn on the heat. I consider it foolish and a waste of money. I like to keep my living space at a nice 76F. Not too hot, not too cold. Comfortable and dry. In other words...Conditioned...

We have just had a new central air conditioner, we have set it to 22 degrees Celsius (about 73 Fahrenheit). Right at the moment we are still getting used to what is the right setting.

That's right. One needs to experiment to reach their comfort zone and, then, consistency is the key to keeping your light bill at a reasonable level. Enjoy your new Central A.C. :-)

@Wordly1 It is currently set at 22 degrees Celsius (71.6 Fahrenheit) which generally seems a good temperature, although there are times it feels a little cold, but moving it to 23 degrees seems a little warm.

@pgiblett Everyone has their own level of comfort and that one or two degrees plus or minus makes all the difference.

I agree that it's silly to drop the temperature of your home so much that you have to bundle up to be comfortable. at bedtime it's a different story, though, because I can't sleep unless it's cool, at least 68 and preferably 66. I like a little cover to snuggle under. 76 is a little too warm for me even in the daytime, but it's what you're accustomed to.

Over here, hardly anyone uses window unit. We use the split units that are supposedly cheaper. I switch on the air con for at least an hour every evening else my room will be as hot as a furnace. That is one bad side of living in the equatorial zone.
